View Full Version : Tupac
Okay, the TV here is playing advertisements now for that dead guy Tupac, or whatever his actual name was. What the heck is it with this guy? As far as I can tell he was just one more talentless rapper type guy pumping out the same monotonous crap his predecessors and clones produce. I see not one shred of any kind of musical talent or lyrical genius or anything. Why is he popular at all? Just because he's dead? I hope not. I know many dead people who aren't popular.
No idea why he is/was so populair. His dead prolly did add to it, for some reason some dead people are more populair then other people who are still breathing. Hmm could dead become the next big trend?
Given some of today's "talent", I hope so...
Neutrino_Albatross 09-13-02, 03:09 PM Someone once told me that he faked his death and was comming back. Never figured out why they believed this exactly.
*stRgrL* 09-13-02, 03:35 PM I never thought too highly of Tupac while he alive, but I totally digged his music. His music rocks! And no he was not talentless, he lived about 45 minutes from me and lived in one of the worst ghettos in Cali. So I give him credit for making something of himself - and he was a gifted rapper at that. Go buy his greatest hits CD, or better yet, go buy his Makaveli CD - totally awesome:)
Aint nuttin but a gansta party.... :D
*stRgrL* 09-13-02, 06:14 PM Someone once told me that he faked his death and was comming back. Never figured out why they believed this exactly.
People were saying this because his last album, he renamed himself Makaveli. I dont know much about this man, but supposedly he faked his own death and then made a suprise comeback. *shrugs* And since he died not long after that album came out, everyone was saying it was a conspiracy.
Take care:)
The only reason I knew who Tupac Shakur was comes because his mother, Afeni Shakur, was a Black Panther, and her name still bears at least some weight around American civil rights issues. Tupac's rap, unfortunately, is the minor story, all things told.
Other than that, I've heard enough slobbering conspiracy tales about Tupac Shakur that I hope he's dead. Because if not, well, I won't start on the fans except to say that it would be ironic if he was alive and none of the conspiracy theories could get anyone close to what was really going on. It's kind of the way I feel badly for JFK; having met part of an Oregon group that was dedicated to resolving the JFK conspiracy, I concluded that the conspiracy theorists were doing injustice to Kennedy by assuming that everything was so ... well, in that case, stupid-simple.
Tupac may not have been a leading man. He may have been a revolutionary spark, spent and left to cinder.
thanx,
Tiassa

•_2Pac Legacy (http://www.2paclegacy.com/) allegedly has an interview with Afeni Shakur, but I need to start cycling through browsers to find one that works. So far, all I get is a really annoying flash intro that sounds like 2Pac speaking over a bad loop of Mr. Mister's "Kyrie Eleison" .... I don't contest what he says, per se, but I am easily annoyed with long Flash intros, and also with bad sample loops.)
(Correction: the Mister Mister loop is from "Broken Wings".)
NightFall 09-14-02, 01:42 PM i didn't think he ever actually faked his death. he was just kinda.. chaging his name.. becuase in several of his songs under the name tupac/2pac he aso uses "makaveli". i think people origionally thought ha faked his death, just becuase he is a celebrity.. just like kurt, princess di... and the many others that im too young to rmeember. lol. but i think now many people beleive he never died becuase they keep "finding" new, unreleased cds that his mother finishes putting together.......
NightFall 09-14-02, 01:58 PM • Notes on "living Tupac" theories
great link tiassa... now im gonna hafta go dig out some of my old cd's.....
Neutrino_Albatross 09-14-02, 03:06 PM People were saying this because his last album, he renamed himself Makaveli. I dont know much about this man, but supposedly he faked his own death and then made a suprise comeback. *shrugs* And since he died not long after that album came out, everyone was saying it was a conspiracy.
Thanks for the info. And to think I assumed that there was only one person in the world stupid enough to belive that crap.
Turns out Tupac is one of what I consider the great artistic tragedies. It was by coincidence yesterday that I came across a Tupac special on M2, among which much was made of his private poetry. They happened to show one of the sessions from the memorial CD made from Tupac's poetry, and I was left breathless.
Compared to samples of "Broken Wings" and "That's Just the Way it Is" I'm left wondering where this product was during Tupac's life.
And what I must tread gently upon: For anyone who has noted my harsh appraisals of what is and isn't art in pop culture, this is a great example. Maybe he was as good a rapper as people say, but I can't tell with the really annoying samples; they are the dominant themes of the songs. He was definitely a poet, and I do find it sad, as both an artistic and a human value, that it was samples of Mister Mister and Howard Jones that marked his career. Quite obviously, he had so much more to tell people than the medium was prepared to allow.
I am more impressed by Tupac Shakur this far after his death than I ever was during his life. Must people die in order to be taken honestly?
How sad.
thanx,
Tiassa
My thoughts exactly. Even after I stopped listening to rap I still considered Tupac an artist in that he can express what he feels. Not only did he sing of the hard life, he talked of inspiration, determination and hope. Not all of his songs were gansta rappish. His music was deeper than that. Keep Ya Head Up and Dear Mama come to mind. After buying his last Cd's before his death I quit listening to rap because all the others just babble nonsense.
A quote I saw off another forum:
"Rap is the most commonly misspelled word in the english dictionary. Everyone forgets the silent 'C' at the beginning."
Dansgurl69 02-10-03, 06:33 PM I aint trying to be mean or anything but i dont think you people now what your talking about. I think that was really mean what u sed about 2pac! you dont know nuthing about him to say all that and to be so mean!!!! 2pac was a great rapper and still is!!!people resepect him and i think u should to!!!
valentino 02-10-03, 08:35 PM I don't like anything that glamourizes thug life to make it look exciting/cool, because living up in poverty in violence is not really something to be desired. However, it is great that the rappers can draw upon their experiences to educate the masses about how hard that kind of life is.
Dansgurl69 02-10-03, 08:52 PM Well some of you dont understand 2pac or other rappers. 2pac wasnt about violence and all that other stuff u people think. Ya he had beef with people and people had beef with him but that aint nun of are bizz and i respect that. But 2pac was about something. And still today he still selling records and putting his music out there. I know for a fact he appreciates everything that everyone is doing for him and his fans that love him !! So i dont think anyone should be poppin lip about something they know nuthing about!! Sorry it dont work like that!!!

How exactly do you "know for a fact"? Also is he really in the state, being dead, to appreciate anything?
Dansgurl69 02-10-03, 09:01 PM For the person who put this quote" Rap is the most commonly misspelled word in the english dictionary.Everyone forgets the silent 'c' at the beginning''. Well i think that you just hatein on it because no one like your music. i think u people are very disrespectful!! first you people poppin lip about 2pac now on are music ya just messes up!!!
Dansgurl69 02-10-03, 09:03 PM i know because that was the kind of person he was he appreciated things and did things for others!!
Dansgurl69 02-10-03, 09:15 PM i dont think he wil fake his death! and i read the story on how he died iight sooo u people need to go some where with that!!
DaMenace123 02-10-03, 10:17 PM Tupac Shakur was one of the greatest rappers of all time in my opinion. He had great rapping skills and was able to hold onto a beat as well as any rapper anyone can name. I agree that there are plenty of rappers out there who surpass his skills, yet he still stands out. Why? Because he had a message to spread that was different than everything else that was coming out at the time. The majority of rap was about glorifying violence, bragging about money, sex, lifestyle, etc. This is EXTREMELY visible in mainstream rap today, which is why the industry is shit. Tupac understood the problems faced by under privelaged people growing up and living in the ghettos of America. He sang about their problems, hoping to raise enough concern to create some initiative to change the situations faced by these people. Tupac knew where he grew up, he understood it, persevered and escaped, yet he never forgot who he was, he represented for all those voiceless lowest-class people who the world will never see.
ozmonster 02-10-03, 10:55 PM Best rapper that has ever lived. He had extraordinary intellectual and creative power. No question.
oz
sycoindian 02-11-03, 06:58 PM definitely a fantastic rapper and a mad poet.. he had good skills.. of course he had his gangsta rap side... at the same time he wrote about the reality of life and what he went through... 'hit em up' is probably one of the best diss ever in music history... and then you got 'changes', 'dear mama'... he was real versatile..
i have to admit that the mainstream rap music scene is pure shit... there is nothin good out... this is when you dig up the underground ish... there are rappers out who make good stuff... mos def, talib kweli, k-os, common, nas, dilated peoples, black eyed peas, rascalz etc etc... there's this group called da grassroots from toronto.. they made a cd a few yrs ago called 'passage through time'.. one of the best hip hop albums ever... very hard to find cuz they only cut a few hundred copies..
rap music hasn't died... there's always a few ppl who are makin it cuz they love it... anywayzz.. enuf of my shpiel.. :D
*stRgrL* 02-11-03, 08:09 PM THE SUN AND THE MOON
Your ways r similar 2 the rays of the sun
Warm 2 many but 2 strong 4 some
The more u R needed the brighter u shine
Watched 4 2 long and your brilliance will blind
The eyes of mortal men who threaten u with doom
They regret 2 c u set but it is time 4 the moon
THINGS THAT MAKE HEARTS BREAK
Pretty smiles deceiving laughs and people who dream with their eyes open
lonely children unanswered cries and souls who have given up hoping
The other thing that breaks hearts R fairy tales that never come true
and selfish people who lie 2 me selfish people just like u
I CRY
Sometimes when I'm alone I Cry,
Cause I am on my own.
The tears I cry are bitter and warm.
They flow with life but take no form
I Cry because my heart is torn.
I find it difficult to carry on.
If I had an ear to confiding,
I would cry among my treasured friend,
but who do you know that stops that long,
to help another carry on.
The world moves fast and it would rather pass by.
Then to stop and see what makes one cry,
so painful and sad.
And sometimes...
I Cry
and no one cares about why.
AND TOMORROW
Today is filled with anger
fueled with hidden hate
scared of being outcast
afraid of common fate
Today is built on tragedies
which no one wants 2 face
nightmares 2 humanities
and morally disgraced
Tonight is filled with rage
violence in the air
children bred with ruthlessness
because no one at home cares
Tonight I lay my head down
but the pressure never stops
knawing at my sanity
content when I am dropped
But 2morrow I c change
a chance 2 build a new
Built on spirit intent of Heart
and ideals
based on truth
and tomorrow I wake with second wind
and strong because of pride
2 know I fought with all my heart 2 keep my
dream alive

Dansgurl69 02-11-03, 09:12 PM i have to agree 2pac was one of the best rappers and still is today! I also have to agree that he was real about what he rapped and wrote. he wasnt about sex and all that bad stuff.he was about life and what goes on in it.I think that 2pac is up in heaven looking down at all his fans that he still ahs today and hes saying thank you!!
YoungWriter 02-12-03, 10:47 PM Please, check out Tupac's book of poetry called "The Rose that Grew from Concrete." I think this is before he became a rap star, and I know that it contains no cursing, but heartfelt poetry.
Tupac is considered great because he was one of the first big rap stars. He wrote meaningful lyrics instead of his "bling bling."
And a rapper who performs with a live band always gains a few extra points.
Suggested songs: Dear Mama, Pain
Dansgurl69 02-13-03, 04:09 PM ok i have to check it out!! and that is soo true 2pac i love him !!

Sorry, nighty, I still have no idea what you mean.
It's a funny phrase though.
I probably do lots of fan stuff and don't even know it. lol.
secretasianman 02-19-03, 10:05 AM Well, as it turns out I was thinking about 2Pac and have been listening to All Eyez on Me (his double album and considered by some critics to be his "magnum opus", if you will) regularly for a little while now... strange since I first listened to it in the 6th grade, which got me listening to rap, which I have largely ceased to do... 2Pac excepted. Even then, I appreciated his ability to hold a beat; his "attack"; an unmistakable voice. Yesterday afternoon, the line "Dear God return me to my essence" (off "I Ain't Mad at Cha" - dig the jazz piano in the background) made me consciously reflect on 2Pac as artist... and lines like " 'Black Power' is what we scream as we dream in a paranoid state/ and our fate is a lifetime of hate" (Only God Can Judge Me - powerful, immediate; there are many more like this) helped confirm this belief... At times, when reading some of his poetry and listening to All Eyez on Me, I imagine I see Tupac's frustration with the limitations of his art... trapped not only in the game, but also by his own means of artistic expression. Or perhaps he speaks of the irony and frustration of Black life in America (which I don't pretend to understand, bear in mind)... From what little I've seen and heard, Tupac was one of those artists who was able to relate to "the masses," to tap into the soul-current of a people (as serious artists do)... perhaps in the same way that Kurt Cobain spoke to his audience... To substantiate this viewpoint one would have to read his poetry, listen to his music, perhaps watch his movies... and express oneself clearly and poetically (like a Nabokov or a tiassa :D ) to sway the hearts and minds of one's readers... and it won't be me writing this particular thesis paper - and if you don't understand, well I suppose that art is usually controversial... EDIT: Or maybe you're not in his intended audience...
EDIT: Yes, I know that the two lines I quoted may demonstrate what I perceive as art rather than anything relevant to 2Pac... I wanted to convince you to "keep an open mind," whatever that's supposed to mean, and however you're supposed to do that...
peace

First off, learn to spell. Second, cursing doesn't help you prove your point. Third, people have different opinions. And fourth, his songs did contain multiple drug references and all songs are open to interpertation (Even "Dear Mama" has a drug reference).
Dansgurl69 02-19-03, 06:57 PM iight listen first mined ur bizz 2) so what that one song and it probly proved a point 3) dont worry how i spell 4) i know every one has an oppion but how whould u like it if some sed fuck u if u were dead 5) dont worry bout if im coursing or not!!!!!! people have no respect !!!!!!

secretasianman 02-19-03, 10:16 PM To summarize my last two posts, Tupac is, by all means, to be taken seriously as an artist. It depresses me that some people don't see things this way.
(this after talking to a vagrant on Telegraph avenue, 46 years old - 16 of which were spent in the penitentiary - bearing bullet scars to attest to his background, who mentioned that Tupac had put up a concert at the prison he was staying in... in his words, "Tupac told it how it is...")
Dansgurl69 02-20-03, 05:27 PM thank u at least someone has respect 4 him! unlike somepeople.
and no need 4 people 2 get smart.

I wasn't getting smart. I was stating my opinion honestly. Lets discuss this issue via PM or e-mail so we won't be taking up board space.
secretasianman 02-20-03, 06:32 PM btw (and this will be my last post hopefully) I think I owe you an apology Youngwriter - I read through the whole thread in the span of about 2 weeks and I must have read your last post at the wrong time (after forgetting the rest of the thread; also I was very tired when I posted). peace
