View Full Version : Trick-or-treating for older kids
Fraggle Rocker 10-23-07, 05:09 PM This is probably only of interest to Americans. "Trick-or-treating" is a Halloween (All Hallows' Eve, now purely secular) custom of children dressing up in scary costumes, going door-to-door and asking for treats. Originally "Trick or treat" meant, "If you don't give us some candy we'll take the wheels off of your wagon and hide them in the church basement," or something like that.
Older kids like to go trick-or-treating too. Even university students. They can make their own very creative costumes instead of having their parents buy them from the store, they get to stroll around the neighborhood with their friends, it's rather a fun way to spend an evening. But many adults resent it when they open their door and discover people bigger than they are with baritone voices wearing costumes, carrying huge sacks, possibly having driven their own cars, and asking for candy.
A good suggestion for any of you teenagers here who would like to celebrate Halloween in the traditional American way:
Let it be known that you're not collecting candy. You're collecting canned goods for charity. The Salvation Army, the local shelter, any worthwhile and well-known cause. Put up flyers and tell all the adults you know so that everyone understands what's going on, will be expecting you, and will have something to contribute.
You can have a good time, you can support a good cause, you can make the adults feel good, and everyone will be proud of you. You can even drive your cars. Just make sure you're well-costumed. :)
Enjoy!
francois 10-23-07, 05:11 PM That's a wonderful idea. Did you think of that, Fraggle?
MacGyver1968 10-23-07, 05:21 PM Bad ass idea....have fun, get drunk, and feed the poor. Sounds like a winner to me!
Baron Max 10-23-07, 07:15 PM Bad ass idea....have fun, get drunk, and feed the poor. Sounds like a winner to me!
Huh? No, no! It's ...."Feed yourself, then have fun getting the poor drunk."
Baron Max

Baron Max
My god, I agree with Baron Max on something.
shichimenshyo 10-23-07, 07:58 PM Cant I feed myself and then get myself drunk? I am poor
cosmictraveler 10-23-07, 08:58 PM You're collecting canned goods for charity.
They have several canned goods drives already, the post office will pick up canned goods twice a year, at football games you can bring canned goods a couple of times when the games are at home, the baseball teams will collect canned goods during their games and there's a drive at local grocery stores a few times a year. I just don't think we need more canned good drives myself. What most people need is money, shelter, clothes, medicines and love besides food.
Fraggle Rocker 10-24-07, 12:15 AM That's a wonderful idea. Did you think of that, Fraggle? No, I can't take credit for this one. They have several canned goods drives already, the post office will pick up canned goods twice a year, at football games you can bring canned goods a couple of times when the games are at home, the baseball teams will collect canned goods during their games and there's a drive at local grocery stores a few times a year. I just don't think we need more canned good drives myself.I guess it depends on where you live. Given that the single greatest nutritional problem among America's poor is obesity, it's obvious that many communities indeed do a pretty good job of keeping them fed. But some are overwhelmed, particularly in places like the "Rust Belt" where jobs are disappearing. What most people need is money, shelter, clothes, medicines and love besides food. You could certainly collect clothes instead. Arrange a Halloween party early in the evening just for the women, and while they're out go to their houses and their husbands will donate all the clothes they've been hanging onto for five years because they're sure they're going to get back down to that size. Then when they get home have a party just for the men, and the women will donate all their clothes that are twenty years out of style. Sure the men will be onto you but if you tell them there's free beer they'll come anyway.
Yes, poor people need love. It was so nice of you to say that. We take care of them out of duty and morality and good citizenship and religion and all that stuff, but we feel about them the way we feel about stray dogs. We hire people to keep them healthy and off the streets, but we don't wanna have to meet them.
I think it was an interesting experiment in social engineering when L.A. (and many other cities) cracked down on homeless camps. They could no longer congregate in parks and industrial areas. They had to split up and migrate individually out into the suburbs. Now everyone runs across a homeless person here and there in their daily routine, even in their own community. It puts a face on them, and it also reminds us how lucky we are. The people in L.A. feel overwhelmed when they see a hundred homeless people in one block. The people in South San Gabriel might just rise to the challenge if there's only three of them.
mountainhare 10-24-07, 02:43 AM Screw the poor. I'd rather have candy.
"I WAAAANT CANDY!"

Halloween? Wassat?
No, we don't have it here.
cosmictraveler 10-24-07, 07:09 AM Halloween? Wassat?
No, we don't have it here.
Where are you located? Do you have any holidays? What are they?
Orleander 10-24-07, 07:10 AM Halloween? Wassat?
No, we don't have it here.
 you don't have free candy day?!
Nikelodeon 10-24-07, 07:15 AM Whats Halloween?
Orleander 10-24-07, 07:26 AM We still have Unicef collectors at Halloween. Anyone get these trick-or-treaters?
shorty_37 10-24-07, 08:28 AM Screw the poor. I'd rather have candy.
"I WAAAANT CANDY!"
LOL Well, I have to agree here. Every holiday is not about the poor, the needy......let the kids have FUN!!!
There is Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving......food drives. Throughout the school yr they have other drives there.
LEAVE HALLOWEEN ALONE!!!!!
shorty_37 10-24-07, 08:31 AM We still have Unicef collectors at Halloween. Anyone get these trick-or-treaters?
Unicef, I remember the little orange box when I was a kid you wore around your neck. I don't see that anymore. My Parents at the time used to say "whats this" I would tell them...They would say well I think they should take care of the needy children in this country first lol.
Instead this month at school they had some kind of Crazy Hat day and some used book sale (parents donated used books) T he kids each brought in a loonie or toonie. It was donated to Unicef.
Orleander 10-24-07, 08:35 AM Yep, its still the little orange box. I think it would be smarter to do it your school's way. They would probably raise more money.
I don't even know what Unicef does anymore.
shorty_37 10-24-07, 08:39 AM Some news letter came on Friday, and I think they said they raised........
about 500.00 something from the hat day and 900.00 something from the book sale.
spuriousmonkey 10-24-07, 08:44 AM older kids should be doing drugs and getting each other pregnant.
When I was 12 I went out for Halloween and got several people refused to give me candy saying I was too big for trick or treating.:bawl: Now I see tons of older teens going door to door. I give them stuff as long as they are polite. I would rather see them having some harmless fun than going out and getting drunk at a party. Course they could be doing just that after they get done trick or treating.
cosmictraveler 10-24-07, 12:52 PM Whenever I see a child over the age of 12 or so I refuse to give them anything. They are old enough to understand that trick and treating is for the MUCH YOUNGER children, not teenagers.

I just give them something from the CRAPPY candy bowl lol.
It also bothers me when small kids come, and the parents don't even bother with a costume. That is the whole point right? Crappy candy bowl too lol.
cosmictraveler 10-24-07, 01:00 PM I only give away fruit, no candy because kids need to have a better thing to eat besides sugar loaded candy, IMHO.
shorty_37 10-24-07, 01:03 PM I only give away fruit, no candy because kids need to have a better thing to eat besides sugar loaded candy, IMHO.
Are you kidding? You may as well hand out nothing. You are wasting food, it all gets tossed.
cosmictraveler 10-24-07, 01:04 PM Not the fruit I give, it is in wraped bags and is sealed from the factory.
shorty_37 10-24-07, 01:05 PM Not the fruit I give, it is in wraped bags and is sealed from the factory.
Each piece of fruit is individually wrapped?
Nikelodeon 10-24-07, 01:06 PM And stuffed with razor blades.
cosmictraveler 10-24-07, 01:07 PM Each piece of fruit is individually wrapped?
I give away bags of dried apples.
shorty_37 10-24-07, 01:10 PM I give away bags of dried apples.
hmmmmm IF they get eaten I am sure they are at the bottom of the bowl lol
cosmictraveler 10-24-07, 01:15 PM That's why not to many parents bring their little "angels" by here any longer. :bawl:
shorty_37 10-24-07, 01:18 PM awwwwwwwwwwwwwww.......because they rather come to my house.
Here they get.....chips, mars bars, kit kat, smarties, aero, m&ms, caramilk,
lolipops, bubble gum.......

Here they get.....chips, mars bars, kit kat, smarties, aero, m&ms, caramilk,
lolipops, bubble gum.......
Then they get sick and :puke:
shorty_37 10-24-07, 01:22 PM LOL well their parents should watch how much of it they eat.
I sort through it, then I leave some out and put some away that they can't
touch right away.
MacGyver1968 10-24-07, 01:23 PM Dude...if someone gave me fruit when I was kid, trick or treating...it would have immediately been thrown back at the house as soon as the door closed.
cosmictraveler 10-24-07, 01:24 PM Dude...if someone gave me fruit when I was kid, trick or treating...it would have immediately been thrown back at the house as soon as the door closed.
I sit on my porch, I never turn my back on the" little folks"! ;)

I am sure the streets are littered with dried apples the next day lolol
cosmictraveler 10-24-07, 01:26 PM Not at all, they never open the bags and just toss the bags away, then I go out and collect them for next Halloween! :D
Orleander 10-24-07, 01:31 PM We give to everyone. Big kids (teenagers) have to have a costume though, and so far they all have been. Little kids, well, if they don't have a costume I don't punish them for it. I've never seen that though.
We give Reese's and KitKats
And if you give dried fruit....you suck. Might as well give raisins and prunes.
I remember when we got popcorn balls. Dang I miss having those.
Orleander 10-24-07, 01:34 PM LOL well their parents should watch how much of it they eat.
I sort through it, then I leave some out and put some away that they can't

My kids sort through it. They trade and share with us. They both know I'm a Dots fiend, so they usually give me those. My husband gets the plain Hershey's.
They keep their stash, but the rule is only 3 pcs a day. They can either take some with their lunch or its dessert after supper.
shorty_37 10-24-07, 01:36 PM My husband gets the plain Hershey's.
YUMMM I love plain chocolate. I think me and your husband would get along fine. I also could give a rats ass what is going on in STAR WARS LOL
cosmictraveler 10-24-07, 01:37 PM I am sure the streets are littered with dried apples the next day lolol
Have you ever tried dried apple slices? They are very sweet and good to eat. I munch on them instead of candy or potatoe chips
shorty_37 10-24-07, 01:38 PM Have you ever tried dried apple slices? They are very sweet and good to eat. I munch on them instead of candy or potatoe chips
Sure, I also like raisins. But kids don't want those for Halloween :bugeye:
cosmictraveler 10-24-07, 01:43 PM I know, kids are wired already then we go out and really get them going. No wonder so many of the little tykes are having eating disorders. :p
Orleander 10-24-07, 02:14 PM YUMMM I love plain chocolate. I think me and your husband would get along fine. I also could give a rats ass what is going on in STAR WARS LOL
double dog dare ya to go set your yard on fire. LOL
shorty_37 10-24-07, 02:18 PM double dog dare ya to go set your yard on fire. LOL
Actually a good idea, then all the Hot firemen would come:rolleyes:
Orleander 10-24-07, 04:52 PM Actually a good idea, then all the Hot firemen would come:rolleyes:
actually, you're right.
&^%$* why didn't I think to call?!
shorty_37 10-25-07, 11:28 AM Anyway I am all ready for Halloween and bought some more mini chocolate bars and sour candies. I couldn't find the dried apples anywhere and passed on the raisins too lol.
My house is decorated, I have skeleton ghosts, bats, tarantulas, bones, skulls, scattered in the garden (just like VARDA LOL ) shrunken heads hanging from the trees, warning signs and spider webs everywhere.
I think I am ready....I am almost as excited as the kids:D
Orleander 10-25-07, 11:37 AM Anyway I am all ready for Halloween....I am almost as excited as the kids:D
How do you take the kids and still pass out candy? We always had my mother-in-law pass out the candy, but now that she's gone....
shorty_37 10-25-07, 11:49 AM Usually I sit out front with my neighbour, and nietzche takes them around. Then he might come back and we switch.
Orleander 10-25-07, 11:51 AM How long are the shifts? We go out for about 4 hrs. I suppose I could do the 1st 2 while its still fairly light out and then go back to the house.
At what age would you let them go with a group of friends?
shorty_37 10-25-07, 11:56 AM Well, I don't know how much longer my older one will go out. He is 11 and told me that he might not go out next yr..but if he does that will probably be it. I leave that up to him.
I would probably let him go right now, with a bunch a friends. Most of his friends parents, I don't think would go for it though.
My 6 yr old still has a few yrs left, but at some point his brother and some of his other friends will probably take him out.
It depends on the weather, the nicer the weather the longer they are out.
Whenever I see a child over the age of 12 or so I refuse to give them anything. They are old enough to understand that trick and treating is for the MUCH YOUNGER children, not teenagers.
You are a meaney! :(:spank:
cosmictraveler 10-25-07, 12:42 PM You are a meaney! :(:spank:
This type of behavior, spanking, belongs on the "kinky sex" thread! :D
