Pretty good movie on the complexities of the war on terror with three dimensional characters on all sides.

"war on terror" is a missnomer for "quest for empire". View any movie on it in this context...

Whatever. Did you see the movie? It really presented people on all sides as human beings.

I did see the movie, but I don't remember much of it. It was kind of similar to George Clooney's Syriana....

I didn't see Syriana, but I got the impression that it was something of a satire. Whereas this movie was completely serious. The main character, Samir, was born in some African country and the opening scene is him saying goodbye to his father as a small child and then seeing him blown to shit by a car bomb. His mother then moves to the US where he is raised as a devout Muslim. He goes on to join the military and sort of disappears while fighting in Afghanistan. He next turns up selling weapons to a bunch of terrorists in (I think) Yemen.

For most of the movie you don't really know whether he's a terrorist or not as he gets more and more involved in the terrorist network. It is clear that he's a devout Muslim and seems to be a very good man. As the movie goes on, it becomes clear that he is actually in deep cover and very conflicted about the use of violence, especially when it results in the death of innocents.

All the characters are presented as real people who believe they are doing the right thing. It's the most even handed, mature exploration of the topic I've ever seen in a movie.

i was bemused by the italian PM's comments recently. He called a group of taliban who drove up right next to a troop truck and then blew up there car inorder to take out the troop carrier "cowards". How can they POSSABLY be concidered cowards, they gave there lives to take out the enermy, the target was a group of people specifically interested in killing them and a legitimate one at that. If you want to name ANYONE cowards its the pilots who romotly control drones so that they are not at risk themselves.

Syriana is a serious move. Clooney actually met the CIA operative whose his character is based on. The bad thing is that his character believes that they are the good guys, when there is no really good guy or if there is, the CIA certainly isn't...

From what I read the CIA even has a wing specialised in destruction and sabotage . Also they operate above the rules, regulations and laws .
Now seven ex CIA chiefs are asking Obama to stop the investigation vis a vis the CIA torture practices . If they have nothing to hide why are they asking such thing ?!!!.
