View Full Version : To Tip or not to Tip?
shorty_37 06-07-07, 07:13 PM My question is this: (in a restaurant)
What do you normally tip if service is good?
If sevice is crap how do you tip or do you tip at all?
Do you tip differently if its a man or woman?
Do you tip differently if the waiter or waitress is attractive or ugly?
darksidZz 06-07-07, 07:24 PM Here, see what the dog man being / monkey being tells his men, he's so fucking cool

what does this have to do with the topic lol
original 06-07-07, 08:08 PM What do you normally tip if service is good?
About a quarter of the total, more or less depending on the money I have.
If service is crap how do you tip or do you tip at all?
Depending on the money I have, the tip will be decided by their service.
Service to me is getting a good meal in a reasonable time with a friendly attitude. If the food tastes like ass and it took two hours to get to me because the server ignored us or worse, then nothing is coming to them. If the food is bad, it's the product or the cook. If either the attitude or service is bad, it's the server.
vslayer 06-07-07, 08:12 PM i dont eat in restaurants, but ive never heard of anyone tipping over here... it might be different up north where living costs are insanely high, but even people on minimum wage can earn enough for a comfortable standard of living here.

You don't tip for services? servers in restaurants, hairdresser, pizza delivery guy..etc. nothing?
vslayer 06-07-07, 08:34 PM dont go to restaurants, dont go to the hairdresser, dont order pizza.
even if i did i would see no reason to tip them unless they did an outstanding job. they get paid to de their job just the same as everyone else.
Exhumed 06-07-07, 08:47 PM Why tip at all? It makes no sense. Lots of people have bad jobs...why tip someone? There is no obligation. They are doing nothing extra for you.
I find pizza delivery and door man the most ridiculous situations. I don't even want someone to hold the door open for me. Pizza delivery? WTF, it's driving? I paid for the delivery, where is this tip coming from?!

We don't usually pay a delivery charge so you tip the driver.
Exhumed 06-07-07, 08:53 PM You are paying a delivery charge whether they specify it or not ;)
It is the EMPLOYER's job to pay them.

i know but like a month ago i ordered a pizza ( we do in a blue moon)
and it was here in 15 mins i thought wow.....and i tipped the guy a few bucks.
My neighbour was doing it and they don't get paid much at all. I don't know its just me but if i get good pleasant service.....I will tip......
Like I get my nails done....I tip but it depends on how good a job they did, and did i have to wait long... and if its crap I won't tip.
But sometimes at a restaurant its a debate.....nietchze is more generous then me....i am like forget it they took to long.....they didn't come for refills with us asking and so on.......he feels we need to leave 15%.....i think thats too much sometimes.......and I try and take money away...lol

nietzschefan 06-07-07, 09:02 PM There are two types of people. Those that had a low paying service job and those that didn't.
Only way I won't give 15%, is if I detect ATTITUDE.

When I am buying something I expect that excellent service is including my bill.
If I were to adopt your style of thinking, I'd expect some money back if it was awful service.

Haha, wrong. A lot of cultures don't tip, and if that is not enough evidence, I used to be a bus boy. I also used to be a caddy, which is a job that tipping is customary.
I had the same uniform as the waiter though, so half the time I was doing half of the work at the waiter's table (at less pay, btw). But did I get the tips that went the waiters way? No, because it's just a retarded set of traditional rules.
Tipping just makes no logical sense whatsoever. Did anyone see that curb your enthusiasm episode where there was a "captain" at the restaraunt, who seated them, and Larry didn't tip him? lol
they get paid to de their job just the same as everyone else.
I'm not sure where you live, but waiters and delivery drivers tend to make very little money on an hourly wage. I made $2.15 per hour as a waiter. It's not that way because the owners are greedy, but because the restaurant business is very tough to compete in... The last time I checked, they typically make only 3% profit on food. To compare, most companies make around 5.2% profit or so... and the employees at these companies typically make more than even minimum wage.

If it is bad service, you simply do not tip.
If you get good and nice service however, it is good manners to give a tip.
You have to keep in mind that a waiter (for example) is earning very little. The expensive bill that you are paying for the food does not all go towards the waiter's wages. I remember when at uni, a lot of my friends worked as waiters part time and all of them used to comment that without tips, they would simply not be able to pay their rent, buy food, etc.
Don't forget, they are earning very little to serve you and serve you well. They have to put up with your questions, complaints about the food (etc), put up with your unruly kids, etc. If they do their job well, they should be tipped.:)
If it is bad service, you simply do not tip.
No, you tip $1, 50 cents.... something small. If you don't even leave a tip, the waiter will think you are forgetful or at least try to rationalize it to be this way. Leave a small amount and its clear that you didn't forgot. It's also clear to the waiter that they suck or that the tipper is an asshole. If the waiter gets enough of these small tips, he'll quit or get better :)

How is that worse than any other low paying job?
madanthonywayne 06-08-07, 01:07 AM Standard tip at restaurant is 15%. It can go up or down depending on the level of service.
Anyone see Reservoir Dogs? Great movie with an excellent discussion on tips.
Mr. Pink: I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's fucked up. That ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government fucks in the ass on a regular basis. Look, if you ask me to sign something that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And as for this non-college bullshit I got two words for that: learn to fuckin' type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big fuckin' surprise.
Mr. Blonde: Was that as good for you as it was for me?
Nice Guy Eddie: C'mon, throw in a buck!
Mr. Pink: Uh-uh, I don't tip.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't tip?
Mr. Pink: Nah, I don't believe in it.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't believe in tipping?
Mr. Blue: You know what these chicks make? They make shit.
Mr. Pink: Don't give me that. She don't make enough money that she can quit.
Nice Guy Eddie: I don't even know a fucking Jew who'd have the balls to say that. Let me get this straight: you don't ever tip?
Mr. Pink: I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.
Mr. Blue: Hey, our girl was nice.
Mr. Pink: She was okay. She wasn't anything special.
Mr. Blue: What's special? Take you in the back and suck your dick?
Nice Guy Eddie: I'd go over twelve percent for that.

I think that is a ridiculous system. Maybe people shouldn't be in the business if they did not account for paying someone the full minimum wage. In countries where it is not expected that you tip, they somehow manage to have plenty of restaraunts. Why not just account for the cost of service in the food? In most places they do. A tip is bonus.

its just a cultural difference really. im sure a pizza is far cheaper in america because of these low wages, but over here when we pay $10/pizza, we know that the guys making and delivering it are getting at least $10.50/hour minimum wage, and we dont need to tip on top of that price.

madanthonywayne 06-08-07, 01:42 AM Pizza delivery is a tough one. I've always given the pizza guy a couple bucks, but lately I've noticed that the place I order from charges like $4 for delivery. Does that all go to the pizza delivery guy? I'm not sure if I need to tip on top of a delivery charge. Anyone ever work as a delivery guy for a place with a delivery charge?

Do you tip the cleaner when they do a good job? When you stay in a cabin/hotel room with a sparkling clean toilet, do you tip the individual who washed the shit from the bowl?

Mr Pink, that you?
phlogistician 06-08-07, 04:17 AM My question is this: (in a restaurant)
What do you normally tip if service is good?
10% is normal here, although some places add a service charge on automatically. I sometimes deduct this (it's optional) and then leave a tip. It's then up to the waiting staff if they declare it and pay tax, but if it's on the bill, they have to pay tax.
If sevice is crap how do you tip or do you tip at all?
If service is crap paying for the meal comes into question, let alone leaving a tip.
Do you tip differently if its a man or woman?
No, and it's rare to get the same waiter/waitress all night at the places I frequent.
Do you tip differently if the waiter or waitress is attractive or ugly?
No, it's about service. To be honest, a good waiter isn't really seen, they just arrive at your table and spend the least amount of time there.
vslayer 06-08-07, 04:24 AM Here you pay 10$ for a pizza as well.

Thats what we do, we have never left nothing...if the waiter is too slow, or doesn't check back to see if everything is ok....or we have to flag him down for another drink......or wait forever for a bill...etc. we leave something really small.....so he knows he /she wasn't doing a great job.....but yes at least knows we aren't some asshole that doesn't tip at all. I know someone that does that......if the service isn't so good.......but really i think they find the smallest thing to complain about so they can rationalize in their mind that they don't have to leave a tip......(they are just really cheap) Alot of these ppl work hard and are very pleasant....I think they deserve a decent tip because you can't live on what they are getting paid.
then whats their excuse for paying such low wages?
I don't know how it works there.
Looking up Papa John's Pizza here in the US (http://finance.google.com/finance?q=PZZA), their profit margin is 5.9% to 6.3%. This is about on par with other companies.
Of course, if you want to stop giving tips to the drivers, then you need to raise the price of a pizza by what... 50 cents? $1? It's not much, but it's enough to make the pizza less competitive here in the US.
When you eat at a lot of "mom and pop" pizza parlors, you notice that the pizza is usually just a bit more expensive because tips are not expected. If the price is the same as the major brands, then it's because the pizza is made with cheap ingredients to balance the price out and make it competitive with the bigger brands like Papa Johns or Pizza Hut.
I pay 15-20% for good service, especially unskilled. (ie non-professional)
Many of these people live on tips, and I see no reason why the value their employers place on their services should be the value I abide by.
Many of these people live on tips, and I see no reason why the value their employers place on their services should be the value I abide by.
Besides, whether people want to tip or not, the employee is going to get paid regardless. If one day Americans decided NO MORE TIPPING... then we would set a standard of around $10 per hour for delivery drivers and waiters. Of course, tipping encourages better service. When I worked as a waiter, the more sucking up you did... the more money you made with customers. The best waiter at my restaurant made 23% in tips average. The average was about 16% or so... I used to average around 18%-20%.
If someone doesn't like tipping for whatever reason, then just don't tip. No one can force you. But not tipping where it's expected is looked down upon here in the US.
phlogistician 06-08-07, 10:14 AM Thats what we do, we have never left nothing...if the waiter is too slow, ...
I think you are too kind. If I get poor service I let the waiter know, and don't tip. I don't leave a cryptic clue in the way of a small tip, I call them over, let them know my displeasure, and bargain over the price of the meal.
I thought it was us Brits that had a reputation for not complaining!

if i do not get thankyou after tipping i will ask for my tip back. if they dont give it back i will take an item home, like a plate or vase, (yes i have done lol)

The waiter has nothing to do with how wonderful your food tastes. That's the cook's problem.

thats true but it matters not, if i dont like the overall experience including the food i wont tip.

$2. More if exceptional.
If sevice is crap how do you tip or do you tip at all?

No

No

if the food is horrible i will refuse to pay for it anyway, and i will not give the waiter a tip also. yea i know it seems unfair,
i shouldent give a tip to anybody for doing their job anyway, they get a wage for it, but if im very happy with the service and the food and the whole experience, then i will give a tip because i enjoyed myself,
doesent seem logical i know.
peace.

your right and i just realised i was bieng bias, so from now on i will tip nobody for anything.
fair is fair :)
peace.
phlogistician 06-08-07, 02:50 PM wow i have never seen anybody do that here. I mean i if the food is bad or not cooked i have said something. But I have never actually talked to the waiter or waitress about there service, I guess I am not that outspoken to do that....maybe I am too nice.....I always say that to myself lol thats why I get taken advantage sometimes, my good nature.
It's not always the waiting staff's fault, so I don't bawl them out or anything, but they are my interface to the establishment, they are it's face. So if I order, and wait an hour for my starter, and then then it's looking the same for my main, I have to have a word with them, like 'why didn't you tell me the waiting time?', 'what is wrong?', and 'if you want me to pay get the manager out here'. I far prefer bawling out managers.
