Allow this old cranky fool explain To Kill a Mockingbird. What I have to say may sound foolish. Yet, it may clarify why prosecutors wish to portray Michael Jackson as a monster rather than a Mockingbird.
Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird Pulitzer Prize Novel is about religious persecution. Harper’s ancestors had fled from Europe to America seeking refuge from religious persecution. She meticulously crafted fictional characters and notorious plot to capture the attention of the world to the religious persecution that exists here in America. Her story has such deep literary meaning that English teachers have taught it to students around the world her classic novel.
The plot commences with Scout, Jem and Dill being curious about a recluse Boo Radley. Boo’s father Arthur Radley was a devout Christian fanatic. He had imprisoned his own son for life on house arrest for the crime he committed as a youth. Boo’s strange life of secrecy made him appear as a monster rather than a human being. The strict punishment of his father had made Boo afraid of adults. Boo wanted to make friends with the kids. Boo hid gifts in the knot hole of an old tree for them to find. The kids found his gifts. They discovered that Boo was not a monster. Rather, he was a lonely man that never had a chance to live a normal life as other children.
Later in the plot, Mayella Ewell lured Tom Robinson a black man in the house to hang her curtains. Tom felt sympathy for Mayella and lent her a hand although his left arm was paralyzed. Mayella began flirting with Tom. Bob came home and caught her. Bob bruised Mayella’s face for daring to show affection towards a Nigger. Bob concocted a story to accuse Tom for raping Mayella and bruising her face. Sheriff Heck arrested Tom. The good White Christians of Maycomb County Alabama huddled around the court house to watch the spectacle unfold. Atticus Finch a reputable White attorney represented Tom’s defense. It stirred up hatred against his family and him. Atticus proved that Tom’s left hand was paralyzed. It was impossible for him to have placed the bruises on the right side of Mayella’s face. The jurors sentenced Tom Robinson anyway despite of the evidence. The prison guards murdered Tom claiming that he tried to runaway from prison.
The greater atrocity of the novel is that on one Halloween night Bob Ewell toted a knife and attempted to stab Scout in her costume. Boo Radley came out of the dark and took the knife to fatally stab Bob Ewell. Sheriff informed Atticus what had happened that night. He never pressed any charges against Boo. The reason is that Boo was a mysterious recluse, who wouldn’t have understood the charges of his own crime.
The plot of To Kill a Mockingbird is unfolding before our very eyes. The characters of Boo Radley and Tom Robinson are manifesting in the form of Michael Jackson. America is the small southern town of Maycomb County, Alabama. We the people are the citizens huddling around the courthouse and our television sets to watch the spectacle unfold.
Michael Jackson's father and brothers locked him up in a hotel to force him to grow up and experience sexual pleasures with women. Michael was torn with practicing abstinence to follow the convictions and teachings of his mother who was a Jehova Witness. Michael did right in the eyes of God.
The sexual abuse he encountered as a child forced him to fear adults and live his life as a recluse. Michael slipped into a world of his own where he could live as Peter Pan. In his mind he never grew up as other children do.
If anyone were prosecuted it would be his promiscuous father or brothers for trying to force a child to have sex agaisnt his will. As a society of Christian people we owe Michael for taking a stand for abstinence.
