View Full Version : Thread closage
wesmorris 06-27-03, 12:53 PM I thought a thread entitled "random info" was about perfect for a forum entitled "free thoughts". Then it was closed. I don't understand why.
Further, I think airavata mentioned a "trend" of thread closings. Whassup with that? Is Dave running short on disk space or something?
CounslerCoffee 06-27-03, 01:11 PM Dave has plenty of disk space as far as I know. However people are getting tired of the kind of threads that get started in free thoughts (And around the board).
Check out groovy threads like "Criticism 101" and "Sciforums has seriously fallen apart."
Fafnir665 06-27-03, 01:20 PM The "people" you speak of must be an outspoken minority, or those with influence. Those threads are populated by at most 25 people, how many total users are there? If this was truly a problem, more of a majority of the, i think its 6000 users, would complain. Maybe a poll in the free thoughts section? I think everyone checks there. Anyhting other then that, it's just the mods opinion, not the peoples say.

Is Dave the only one who can close threads in Free thoughts? So you mean Dave is the one who doesn't like them? It's his board so I can't say much I guess... but I mean as I said before "random info" seems like the perfect thread for "free thoughts" to me. I'm wondering where my reasoning is off there.

I saw the second thread there and I wasn't impressed.
airavata 06-27-03, 02:01 PM Is Dave the only one who can close threads in Free thoughts?
I guess so, because Free thoughts is moderated by him. Maybe he's trying to send a subtle message to all the thread starters.... increase the quality dammit!!! I really don't blame him... this is his forum and to see the quality slip up like this must be disheartening. Don't know why your thread was closed though Wes.
Fafnir665 06-27-03, 02:06 PM Define Quality.
airavata 06-27-03, 02:42 PM How can you define quality. It's a very abstract term. For me atleast, thread quality is something which is interesting, thought inducing etc.

Exactly, each person determines what quality is to themselves. Some people may see quality in free thoughts as it is. You do not. So? Only read the posts you find interesting, and let those who find quality in what you don't, keep their content.

That was never in dispute. I was making a general statement that the quality on sci has gone down.
sargentlard 06-27-03, 02:51 PM He wes i mentioned the trend....not airavata....and i was right.

I don't know what my problem is but I mix you two up all the time. I swear I'm retarded. Get an avatar so I can remember you easier damnit. :)
airavata 06-27-03, 02:57 PM That's a relief to hear sarge. I thought someone was using my account. I would get an avatar wes, only thing is, we have to pay for it. Nerve of these people....
sargentlard 06-27-03, 03:00 PM Well it's kind of right that he asks. Porfiry mentioned that he first used to ask for donations but no such luck.
Also it must cost you a pretty penny to pay for one since it must come out to 144 Rupees or such amount.
airavata 06-27-03, 03:04 PM We're actually fairly well off.... Rs.144 isn't a great amount. But i'm still umm...dependant on my parents... still in school... so i really don't think they would shell out Rs.144 for an avatar. lol

In your personal definition of quality.
by the way, i hear a lot about "this is porfs board, he can do anything he wants with it" fact is he can but he wont. why? cos of a sense of obligation to the community he created. porf wants you to log in. porf wants this to be the #1 forum on the internet. porf wants to bask in the fame and get chicks. porf wants to sell sciforums tshirts and mugs. porf wants to.......
that said... its all the mods fault!!
:D
airavata 06-27-03, 03:12 PM In your personal definition of quality.
Exactly.

I haven't actually been reading Free Thoughts, so any thread closings in that forum were done by other mods.

Good point.

Noble cause indeed. I can relate (with the chicks and the cash and the bizness).

Indeed. Apparently from porf's last post any mod can close stuff in free thoughts.
Okay, it was you wasn't it Coffee. You homosexual bastard. ;)
wesmorris 06-27-03, 04:58 PM I'm happy to cough up my 3 bucks a month to porf's cause. I dig this place. This is the only place I'd bother to do it and I wouldn't bother if he asked for more. It's a great deal IMO and I hope more people cough up the cake for the porfirator. I enjoy uploading my mind. :)
Porfiry 06-27-03, 06:17 PM he can do anything he wants with it" fact is he can but he wont. why? cos of a sense of obligation to the community he created.
Don't count on it.
:D
you finally had enough? perhaps you can get someone else to take the place over rather than just close the place down
airavata 06-28-03, 02:26 AM So must we all listen to your personal definition, and deny our own?
When did I say that? If you want to misrepresent what i said, that's your issue fafnir.

Convo going on :
You : That was never in dispute. I was making a general statement that the quality on sci has gone down.
Me : In your personal definition of quality.
You : Exactly.

This led me to extrapolate what I said.
airavata 06-28-03, 07:32 AM You : That was never in dispute. I was making a general statement that the quality on sci has gone down. Me : In your personal definition of quality. You : Exactly
The quality has gone down from my personal point of view. When did I say that has to be the view of everyone on this forum?
CounslerCoffee 06-28-03, 05:55 PM Okay, it was you wasn't it Coffee. You homosexual bastard.
Actually my awesome mod powers do not extend beyond the scifi forum. However my homosexual conspiracies do.
The envelope please?
(drum roll)
"Because I don't want to administrate my own damn board!"
Quite technically, Dave has been an icon of tolerance. At no time have the users of Sciforums ever really respected his wishes. One of the reasons that he let the bluestreaks continue was that despite his best non-fascist efforts, the users seemed quite content to muck up their own topics and posts.
But I agree that this place is quite ridiculous these days. Of course, I look squarely at myself and my fellow posters. The day we lower the quality of discussion so far that keeping this board in operation isn't worth it, I would not be surprised if it went away. See Parascope (http://www.parascope.com) for an example.
(And if you look at the link and decide to make the obvious point ... well, frankly, that's the point in the first place.)

Tiassa
wesmorris 06-29-03, 03:55 PM My only reason for asking is that my impression of "free thoughts" is for random thoughts that someone might do somethign creative with. I thought "random info" seemed quite applicable. I didn't think I was "lowering the quality of the conversation". Now, obviously someone's opinion was to the contrary, so I'm probing to find out why.
I didn't think I was "lowering the quality of the conversation". I'll borrow a line from my mother: It's not that we don't trust you, dear, but we don't know and therefore cannot trust these "friends" of yours.
I know, I know, it's a cheap line. I really should read the topic before commenting on it specifically ....

On Radioactive Waves 07-02-03, 05:08 AM OMG tiassa, are you OK? You just made 2 posts that fit entirely on my screen
Thread closing is how moderators show us they disagree with our opinions here!
On Radioactive Waves 07-02-03, 07:25 PM I think it has more to do with lack of thought in posts. If you start an interesting meaningful topic, its not likely to be closed. If you start up a thread suitable for discussion at recess time, then it is likely to get shut down. Personally, I only really post in physics & math, and site feedback. I used to look at all the forums, but now I mostly stick in math & physics, the rest of this place can be too scary.
