Today CNN reported that

"U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix failed to mention the drone and the video during an oral summary of the report to the U.N. Security Council on Friday.

Asked whether he thought the inspectors may have purposely buried some information, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said "there could be a number of explanations" -- and that Blix may be asked to explain himself at a Security Council meeting Monday afternoon. "

"Purposely buried some information" - now the Bush Administration is accusing the UN of hiding evidence that might provoke the U.S. to attack. As if we needed any actual evidence!

I would like to suggest that when the U.S. goes to war, the General Assembly ought to employ the

'precedent of what has come to be known as the ''Uniting for Peace'' resolution, adopted by the General Assembly in November 1950 authorising U.N. enforcement in the Korean war. According to that resolution, ''if the Security Council, because of lack of unanimity of the permanent members, fails to exercise its primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security in any case where there appears to be a threat to the peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression, the General Assembly shall consider the matter immediately with a view to making appropriate recommendations to members for collective measures, including in the case of a breach of peace or act of aggression the use of armed force when necessary, to maintain or restore international peace and security''.

Under this resolution, the General Assembly will virtually take over the mandate of the Security Council to enforce international peace and security.' (http://www.globalpolicy.org/security/issues/iraq/attack/2003/0131ga.htm)

Furthermore, I think that the 176 countries in the General Assembly ought to press for the dissolution of the Security Council and the reorganization of the UN under democratic principles. If they don't do that, then they ought to just close the UN down and forget about it.
