What kind of political message does that send its readers.

We need a sports thread. Let this be it.

There is a healthy discussion about athleticism in the Compartmentalization thread.

There is a link between sports and nationalism?

If we worked at it, we could find "links" to something for everything that ever happens in the world ....but we usually don't, do we?

Well sport is quite a political issue - it kicked off the Balkan Conflict, brought peace to the trenches of the Somme, caused an international incident when certain cricketers were found cheating, Olympic Games=big bucks, Janet Jackson at the Superbowl...ad nauseum.

    Politics and sport?
So well done Hitler. I think this probably proves that the Holocaust never happened.

Yep - sport is a proxy medium for politics and social engineering. Most traditional sports had their origin in mating rituals and later maintenance of warfare skills in peacetime populations.

What kind of sports thread is this with no discussion of the superbowl that is to be played in a few hours?

Nobody outside the US cares about the Superbowl - except the odd expatriate American, of course.

Australian Rules! Now there's real football!

There probably could be a sports subforum, or a subforum could be altered to include it.
There's a lot of science to sport, from many angles.

I agree with james R for once, american sports are a waste of time. "we are the best at the thing only we do, YEAH!!! Yeah WOOO!! I'm going to disneyland in florida".
    It's like they think they're a planet.

They could at least make up for it by teams being comprised of people actually from the area that the team is supposed to represent.
"Oh yeah? well our team bought better players than yours".
I know this happens in most sports, but then it all climaxes with world cups or state of origins or whatever where people represent their home land. This never happens in american sports.
This is the primal base signifigance of sports, regions competing to show they grow better athletes, and it's just completely lost in american sports.
So how anyone can give a shit is beyond me.

On top of this, the sports at their broken down essence are far more shallow and stupid.
Cricket is to baseball what beethoven is to britney spears.
Ditto for rugby vs american football. Except american football is even worse it's like watching a behind the scenes making of a britney spears music video.

Basketball was a somewhat original game at least, and a few other countries have taken it on quite seriously. So I'll let it slide (although it is still incomparable to a noble sport like cricket).
But the cheap imitation sports of baseball and gridiron are very weak, shadows of their meaty british counterparts.

    What the Hell?

    Cricket better than baseball?

Cricket is the most retarded game ever conceived. Make fun of football for being called football and yet involving running and passing the ball, but do not pull "cricket is better than baseball!". Baseball knocks the stuffing out of cricket.

Good goddess, sports is the biggest topic in this entire country. There are whole populations of men who, as far as I can tell, care about nothing else and talk about nothing else. Can't there be just one place we can go that doesn't have a sports page?

Cricket is to baseball what the Spice Girls are to Brittany Spears.

Americans don't care what nobodies think.

It's our party, and you weren't on the invite list.

No wonder you're lashing out at us for enjoying ourselves without first taking you into consideration.

    Only in Australia.

Oh, wait. No one seems to care about real football, except Australians.

    Too funny for more words.
