Does the technology of Mass Effect have any basis in fact? They go into alot of depth to explain it, etc, and it's pretty interesting.

Mass Effect takes place in 2183, and paints a rather advanced view of the future.

Most of the technology revolves around "mass effect fields" and "element zero" technology.

    Element Zero:

Element zero, also known as 'eezo', is a substance that, when subjected to an electrical current, releases dark energy which can be manipulated into a mass effect field, raising or lowering the mass of all objects within that field

    And mass effect fields

And what of the other things? Like the Citadel, it's absolutely freakin' huge and really incredible. I don't think we'll have a space station like that for a long, long time.
