I use win98
Well for normal files,i just right click and delete .And clear recycle bin.
For installed files,i uninstall it using it's options or else goto control panel>add/remove programs and then delete it.

But the problem is with setup files. They cannot be uninstalled normally.
If you right click and delete, it shows you messages like "you may not be able to run/edit certain applictions again".These files are associated with other files
and cannot be deleted normally. But i still often delete such files by simply by simply making them "read only".But i know it can cause damages.
So what's the proper way to delete such files?

I downloaded and installed(as i said in another thread) some eraser applications lately and then removed it.Now if I right click my recylcle bin it shows an option "erase recylcle bin".The option does not work and show some message "can't find a <certain> file".How do i remove that option from my recycle bin since it was not originally there?

Please help.

honestly, I don't understand.

You delete most files (like word documents, or excel spreadsheets) by right clicking and selecting "delete". That's fine.

You remove applications by using the "add/remove" control panel, or with the application's uninstall tool. This is also fine.

But what do you mena by "setup files"? like setup.exe that most applications are installed from? Those should be easily delete-able through the right-click, "delete" method you would use for any non-application file.

You say that you then often delete these files by making them "read-only". This is really where you lost me. Making a file read-only does not in any way erase it.

What am I missing?

As far as the new contextual menu option of "erase recycle bin", you don't mean "empty recycle bin"? What eraser application were you using? Maybe that appliction did not properly un-install when you tried to remove it from your system?

no the "erase recycle bin" was another option present along with "empty recycle bin".
but anyway ,now I have formatted drive C: to XP.
the reason why asked was because many of my files were getting corrupted. :(

>>I have installed a directx 9 file..Can any1 tell me as to how can remove this application?I can't find it in control panel>add remove programs.
please help.

DX9 is part of the operating system, if you remove it winXP will not function correctly..

BTW,I dint want to remove it just move all the related files to a particular folder of my choice. But it was not 'moving'.that's why i asked.Anyway i guess it is safe where it is. :)

In Windows, many files need to be in certain locations in order to work. Moving them is not advisable.

Your personal documents can be freely moved around inside the "My documents" folders, but it's best not to move anything else, for danger of breaking the Operating System.
