View Full Version : The most important thing in life
A friend of mine yesterday asked me, what I think is most important in life.
I quoted one scholar, with whoom I happen to agree, and answered that
the most important thing in life is the experience of being alive.
She agreed.
What do you think?
lightgigantic 08-06-07, 04:55 AM its our spiritual nature to desire eternality
its our material nature for our molars to rot
To live it in such a way that you can be proud of yourself at the end of it.
From an evolutionary viewpoint i would say it is most important to produce as much offspring as you can (afford) with the fittest mate possible, and to make sure your offspring is succesful in this world (which increases the chances of their offspring etc, etc). In short: survival of your genes and the human race in general.
one_raven 08-06-07, 06:02 AM Sensual stimulation.
It drives us from the moment we are born, until the moment we die.
It is how we experience the world.
It is the root of everything we know.
It is the core of all pleasure and all pain.

Well aren't your answers pretty fuckin bomb this morning as they say. But I have to disagree with that.

one_raven 08-06-07, 06:37 AM Cortex_Colossus,
How, other than the physical senses, does one experience life?
'ppreciate the link up,

I don't know what you mean.
Sensual stimulation.

It is the root of everything we know.
It is the core of all pleasure and all pain.
In other words, it's the experience of being alive, yes?
We experience the world and ourselves as a part of that world through our senses.

but there is a difference between being alive and living that life?
I think of dragon (sorry hon) who talks about his life, but doesn't live it.
but there is a difference between being alive and living that life?
Life can be experienced in many ways. If one just sits in his work from 9 till 5 and then goes home, watches tv and then goes to bed, then that experience is very shallow.
Life as adventure, not as vegetable existence.
one_raven 08-06-07, 07:19 AM In other words, it's the experience of being alive, yes?
In my perspective, yes.
Others may hear that and think of it as referring to the emotional joy of being alive or some other aspect they consider integral to live - such as spirituality.
EmptyForceOfChi 08-06-07, 07:24 AM the most importand thing is to make sure life continues after you die.
peace.

No, I didn't mean anything like that.
the most importand thing is to make sure life continues after you die.

 No offense but how do you make sure.. ? I mean you can belief what you want but dont tell you are sure.
Edit: Or did you mean that in another way.. probably :)
the most important thing in life is to find a way to end it. to find a way out from this prison (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0123755/). if this sounds insane, this is exactly what buddhists want.
but i don't think there is a way out, so the most important thing is to be happy.

i mean make sure your genes are passed on, to continue the family tree, basicaly make sure you reproduce. because we are all here because our parents done us the honour of reproducing. so everything we know and love we have our family and ancestors to thank.
if we dont continue the blood line then humans cant enjoy life and experience the universe. for all joy, happiness, knowledge and everythign in between, we need to be born to do any of that.
peace.

:) thought you meant that. Evolutionary purpose.

You have a poor understanding of the Buddhist philosophy or you have another definition of life.
Reaching the state of nirvanic bliss doesn't mean to die, just living "above the whirlwinds of samsara" that confuse ones mind.
EmptyForceOfChi 08-06-07, 09:16 AM :) thought you meant that. Evolutionary purpose.
yeah, there are many important reasons for life, but without life itself its not important, love, hapiness, honour, respect, enjoyment, wealth etc. they are all nothing without life itself.
the most important thing about life is to make sure life goes on, because without it, none of that other shit matters.
peace.

Reaching the state of nirvanic bliss doesn't mean to die, just living "above the whirlwinds of samsara" that confuse ones mind.
nice explanation, the realms of samsara are what traps the buddhist. escape the cycle.
peace.

nirvana means that you realize that you have no ego, so you cease to exist. but nirvana doesn't last forever, because nothing lasts forever.
samsara is the cycle of rebirth. it can never stop. you are always reborn. buddha was wrong.
i should know, because i was buddha in my past life.
nice explanation, the realms of samsara are what traps the buddhist. escape the cycle.
in otherwords: escape the rebirth (life/existence)?
Wisdom_Seeker 08-06-07, 12:02 PM You only re-born if you are a Bodhisattva, not a Buddha.
nirvana means that you realize that you have no ego, so you cease to exist
The ego, not you.
but nirvana doesn't last forever, because nothing lasts forever.
An argument with no premises is no argument. Besides you're wrong, energy does.
samsara is the cycle of rebirth.
Samsara means not being in control of oneself, but one is controlled by desire, fear and social duty.
buddha was wrong.
Perhaps. But so are you.
i should know, because i was buddha in my past life
Yes, and I was Chingiz Khan. Move along now.
And I still think that you have a poor understanding of Buddhim.
You only re-born if you are a Bodhisattva, not a Buddha.
buddha was wrong. rebirth can't be stopped. nirvana is temporary.
Besides you're wrong, energy does.
everything lasts forever but nothing lasts forever in the same state/form. everything changes, everything is reborn.
that is the only thing that never changes...
And I still think that you have a poor understanding of Buddhim.
christians have a poor understanding of the bible.
~ reborn buddha
