Yes. Kinetic Energy----> Chemical Energy ----> Fuels the batteries.

Same concept as the hand-crank radio.

They're not too bad. I got a couple as a gift a couple of years ago. "Shakelight" brand but basically identical to the picture in the link. Not overly bright, but on the other hand you're never out of batteries. My dad has a three led recharged by a crank instead of by shaking. That one is really good. I think the brand name was "Nebo".
