Hey Paul, I read that that in 2005 CERN will have it's new particle accellerator online, with even higher energy levels than used at Fermis Lab. Maybe the Europeans will beat the americans when it comes to ending the universe as we know it. Thank you for your kind interest in this matter.
And how would they end the universe? Cosmic rays with higher energies strike the upper atmosphere all the time and we're still here.
Guys, vortexx is refering to the Paul Dixon thread... Its been up for over two years. Dixon has been saying the particle accellerators are going to cause a supernova. Dixon is a nutcase. Vortexx, I, at least got the joke. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Don't call me a crackpot when I ask this, I'm more of an armchair astronomer...but, I thought I heard somewhere that somewhere someone was trying to build a mini black hole. Care to alleviate this rumor, anyone?
To survive black holes needs to be really big. If it was indeed possible, we would have been long gone from some random particle colliding with another with extreme speed creating a black hole. Also, we would have seen alot of black holes sprouting up everywhere a particle of high energy collided with another.
Re: Re: The end is near! I thought it was intended to create those black holes and measure stuff while they existed (the very short time)
Many thanks to everyone for most prompt actions during this tragic crisis. I've heard of loose talk on such a thing, but never any actual plans. I think it was more along the lines of "Maybe we could do this one day, but right now its a bit beyond us..." kinda thing. Then again, I sure Paul Dixon would have all the answers for us. Your kind attention and consideration in this most salient matter are gratefully appreciated. Yours sincerely, Mephura, Ca.T.
Re: Re: Re: The end is near! Yes. That's the intention. As I said. In order for them to survive for a longer period of time they need to be much more massive.
Re: Re: Re: Re: The end is near! Yeah well i'm pretty sure we do not want to create a permanent black hole (atleast i hope that is not their intention Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! )
....Supose a permanent black hole could be created and even tough we could perhaps contain it in a magnetic field and keep the tiny black hole alive by feeding it with the same amount as photons/particles as is lost through Hawkings radiation etc, do we really want to research that? What if the electricity blacks out, surely you need some Perma magnets and also it would be a nice target for terrorists to hostage the world....
