LONDON, England -- Pete Townshend, the legendary guitarist of The Who, was released on bail late Monday after being detained earlier in the day on child pornography charges, police said.

Townshend, 57, has not been charged but must report back to police, who are still investigating the case, by the end of the month, Scotland Yard said.

Townshend was arrested at his home in London on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children, suspicion of making indecent images of children and suspicion of incitement to distribute indecent images of children, Scotland Yard said.

In a statement last weekend, Townshend acknowledged visiting a Web site advertising child pornography. He said he was not a pedophile and had used the site only once, as research for an autobiography dealing with his own suspected childhood sexual abuse.

He made the admission Saturday after a newspaper reported that detectives were investigating an unidentified British rock star on charges of downloading child pornography.

A police spokesman said two warrants were executed Monday at separate addresses in southwest London. "One address is a business address, and the other is residential. A number of items, including computers, have been removed from the residential address for forensic examination."


Not only did he use his credit card to download this crap, but they also think he made some of the images. This is some sick shit.

Well, as this story just broke, we might hold off on any judgments until more facts become clear. All I can say is, if Pete is innocent, I hope his name is duly cleared. If not, he can reap the whirlwind.

I doubt very much that he was simply doing research. If the guy wanted decent facts on child porn, he should go to the police for some hard data rather than browsing porn pics on the web.

Looking back; Tommy seems to deal quite a lot with this line of interest, eh? Whether he was doing reserach or not is questionable, however if Pete says he was abused as a child and that's what formed this in his head I am inclined to give this statement some weight. If he's proven guilty however, may he turn out better than Gary Glitter.

A lot of child abusers have a history of being abused themselves, it's like they have been infected with a disease and now spread it themselves....


...either the trauma caused obsessive compulsary behaviour or maybe it's just that they discovered the delights of anal stimulation on much too early age and have become highly sexualized as a result. I read some story about a jamaican child that was abused and through child shelter was adopted to a decent american family, where the child was caught several times sodomizing the familly dog....

Some stories are reporting that Townshend has denied downloading anything; others say he has admitted to it. None have any direct quotes, so I'm not sure who is right. But either way it is apparently not true that Townshend was caught with child pornography on his computer, because no one has searched it yet. He is being investigated for using his credit card to access a child pornography site.

I am willing to believe that Townsend is telling the truth, and for a child-abuse campaigner it must be frustrating to come across instances of potential and real child pornography (as Lord only knows what some of the links in spam lead to) and not be able to do anything about them. The problem, of course, is like the guy who takes a pocketknife on an airplane because he knows he doesn't intend any harm - it's a case of extreme naiveté combined with good intentions. If Pete got so far to find a site which promised kiddie porn, he should have told the police about it and let them sort it out, not pay money to check it out himself. If nothing else, did he really want to give his money to that sort of person?
