View Full Version : The Way It Was
and2000x 12-08-03, 05:24 PM Look upon these ruins, and dream about what our civilization could be. We have the power to make man greater, why waste it?

Dr Lou Natic 12-09-03, 01:36 AM I see what you mean, I think.
I think the cities of today look tacky compared to what mayan cities for example would have looked like.
Its because we have competing architects all trying to be original. I like the idea of a city with ALL white buildings done in a similar style. Like greek residential area's look cool IMO.
It would be great if each city had its own style or theme instead of what we have now. And if they looked less artificial.
I blame it on too many different people, ie a lack of eugenics. I like to blame everything on a lack of eugenics, but its probably true.
Just looking out my window I see so many different buildings all different colours and styles, made out of different materials etc.
It might seem cool at first but I think its the sign of an inexperienced society and I think we'll grow out of it. I hope so anyway. The city as a whole should be aesthetically pleasing and timeless. I can't think of one that is.
The first civilisations intact would have been something to behold.
Dr Lou Natic 12-09-03, 01:48 AM I think cities should be made of human bones.
Aliens would think we are so much cooler than they do now.
spidergoat 12-09-03, 03:01 PM Greater how? Better architecture?
and2000x 12-09-03, 04:43 PM You all have kind of the idea, and I think Dr. Lou Natic is kind of heading in my direction. I'm saying, let's push humanity to the limits, let's suck the marrow out of life, in the way these grand civilizations did. Let us not only build marble buildings, let us build space cities, let us build grand societies, let us build superior human beings: strong, proud, unwavering before the challenges of life. Today we have greater technology, more knowledge of the sciences, better medicine, more freedoms. But do we have better people? Do we have a better way of life? Do we have WISER people? Think about it.
guthrie 12-09-03, 04:49 PM What do these ruins have in common? theyre religious monuments. Nuff said.

Agreed. Art serves a purpose, thus it should be breathtaking, durable, and well thought out. This is difficult for modern societies because they are more business-practical oriented. I say to hell with billboards.
It would be great if each city had its own style or theme instead of what we have now. And if they looked less artificial.
Very true, having a unique theme gives each city a sense of unity and exclusiveness.
I think cities should be made of human bones.
There is a church made of mostly bones: http://www.ludd.luth.se/users/silver_p/kutna-1.html

Actually, I agree. Our society is terribly out of shape. I am pro-eugenics.

It's not the ruins that matter here, it's the civilizations they belong to. Furthermore, the religious devotion to them is a testament to the human spirit.
skyederman 12-09-03, 04:57 PM If those monuments are indicative of the wisdom of their people, then the people of Vegas must have reached nirvana.
That may have been nicer to look at, but where's the technology? How can it be better without radiation from cellphones that mutate our brains, how!?

M*W: Well, they may not have had cell phones, but these ancients did have crude batteries and, who knows, there are indications that there were visitors from other dimensions who brought the ancients certain advanced technologies. Maybe the cell phone and Internet aren't really all that technologically advanced. When the archeologists of the future dig up our bones, they will say we too were a primitive race.
BigBlueHead 12-17-03, 02:04 PM I hesitate to believe the aliens claim... there's plenty of people who claim to be visited by aliens now, and I don't believe them either, so I'm not sure whether to give more credit to someone who died centuries ago.
As for the structures... there's some pretty cool buildings to be seen from the modern times too.
guthrie 12-17-03, 05:33 PM Firstly, its a large jump from crude batteries to the internet. Its taken us over 100 years to do so. Other dimensions and strange technologies seem to have no useful evidence available, so are likely mince.
"It's not the ruins that matter here, it's the civilizations they belong to. Furthermore, the religious devotion to them is a testament to the human spirit."
Well, the human spirit and its need for deitys, ie father figures etc, or its love of enslavement, or what? Then I like it how at the top you say we have the power to make man greater, so that could be taken as the deification of mankind. A concept of man as god, and of god with man as subordinate etc, cant coexist.
A better way of putting it might be to say that a civilisation which has a unifying, transcendent ideal has tremendous organising abilities.
Clockwood 12-21-03, 08:05 PM I have to admit, though the art of city building has made a few advances but has lost a fair share as well. Yes, we have indoor plumbing, more effective roads, and lots of other great things but it cost way too much. Modern buildings are ugly as sin (if not individually then they clash with their neighbors), expensive to construct and repair, need huge amounts of energy, are obsessed with covering every surface with glass pains, and generally cause loads of problems. The same applies to the maintenance-fiends and gridlock-factories we call roads.
Were the cities of long-lost civilizations any better than ours though? Nope. In most cases they had far worse problems than ours. Many had no sanitation, had packed scrawny little roads covered completely with horse excrement, were fire hazards, and if you wanted a drink you usually had to walk to the river or a well. Still, they had their virtues and we should learn to emulate these while leaving out the bad parts of both then and now.

so how come these civilizations are dead and gone and we are still here?;)
guthrie 12-23-03, 05:49 PM Unfortunately And200x has decided to leave, see his thread asking about unsubscribing in the feedback section. So no more fun to be had with him.
