I'm currently a serviceman in my country's armed forces, and I was thinking of going on to command school after basic. I found an old article by this General Krulak, and was wondering if the three-block war scenario he describes will actually come to pass in an actual war in my country (I'm not talking Iraq or Afghanistan here), and if there actually will be such heavy responsibilities laid on the non-coms. Because right now most of the infantry training we do is for the field; wide, ranging plains and jungle and the like and none of that urban stuff that I honestly think will make up a real war - if it even comes to that.

I met General Krulak when I was a US Marine. He is right about his assessment of modern war. The future is always subject to change but right now in Afghanistan and Iraqi cities the noncoms are heavily relied upon to make good decisions quickly.

having been a marine myself, it is always a possibility that nco's will have to make command decisions in any conflict so it definitely is a good idea to have that preparation.
