View Full Version : The Oscars so jumped the shark

I would say about 3 years ago. As much as I love Jon Stewart, he is not good for the show and Chris Rock was even worse. Not to mention, who really cares which movie gets what?
The show used to be good entertainment, but 4+ hours is just way too long and without Crystal or Martin it is just not worths watching....

No one cares about the Oscars anymore except Hollyweird and the National Enquirer addicts. This will probably be the worst viewship year ever. And the writers' strike didn't help.

I don't watch them, but I do want to know who wins. I wouldn't have bothered to see Little Miss Sunshine otherwise.

Don't know. Don't care. The Oscars are a joke now. No one cares anymore about elitist brats/self-absorbed morons prancing for the camera. Ugh...

Sorry, but no. It is an American cultural expression from the series Happy Days. It means when a show has ran its course and there are no new ideas and the best thing should be just kill the show.

In Happy Days the Fonzy character actually jumped a shark while waterskiing, thus the expresson. There is a website called jumptheshark.com where you can vote for shows if they already passed their zeniths or not...

Denzel Needs Another Oscar For American Gangsta

The ratings are in the toilet (Down about 10%/year). Americans are more concerned with bigger things than spoiled brats in Hollyweird. Yes, some of their liberal friends still support them. But not like before. Others will go to good, wholesome movies, but the movie industry in gerneral is suffering.

I bet all the crimnal aliens will be watching. Keeping rubbish on TV is an effective way of undermining the integrity of the US. It leaves less time for people to hear the word of god. Now consider the mindless sitcoms and millions of Americans watching while they eat TV dinners or hamburgers and French fries and you will see how the plain, simple, bible-reading folk are not getting the wholesome fare for which they crave.

The bigger things Americans are concerned with are their bellies.

To avoid ambiguity, can I suggest that US citizens are referred to as Americanos del Norte.

You mean the ratings for the oscars. Movie theater attendance?
The sales of gossip magazines are incredible, Sandy. The tv programs on celebrities and entertainments are all over the place, the worldwide fascination about actors and actresses has never been so great. Now they have lines of clothing and perfumes. Hollywood is everywhere. Wanna look at DVD rentals and sales worldwide. Right or wrong in what you wish was true, Sandy, your statement that 'no one cares' is just not connected to reality. It is what you would like, but it has nothing to do with what is.

I know here most of the theatres have dropped movie prices to $3.50 til 6 pm. They had to get people in somehow.

Both.

Ticket sales are down 12%. Attendance was flat in 07, after a narrow increase in 2006 and three previous years of sharp declines.

But Sandy you do realize that this has to do with DVD sales, cable movie channels, people downloading films from the internet, people copying films. You do realize that the fascination with stars has not decreased. We are in a technological shift, not a cultural one.

That is another issue. The fact that people will shell out money because Charlize Theron is selling the perfume or whatever shows that actors and actresses are part of what people care about despite what you think they should not care about.

I don't care what they care about. I know what I read. And everything I read says movie ticket sales/theater revenues/Oscar viewing are all down.

Maybe if Hollywood made another great movie like the 'Passion of the Christ' or 'Titanic', instead of all the anti-war stuff, sales would skyrocket again.

That's fine that you don't care. I was merely pointing out that you were wrong. I'll bet people are making less calls on their home phones, but this doesn't mean people are making less phone calls.

I liked the Titanic also. In the spirit of finding something to agree on.

Dark films and politics loom over Academy Awards:

The films that will be honored are expected to be darkly pessimistic and the comedy sharply political.:(

The two front running movies for the best film honor are violent, the 3rd tells of corporate/legal greed, the 4th of family betrayal and the 5th teen pregnancy. :(

It's supposed to rain. Combine that with anti-America, anti-war movies, bad political jokes, treasonist comments, whiny/over-indulged show-offs, and it sounds like a grand old time. Not.

I just heard today that the closest cinema charges $9 for an evening show. I was under the impression that it was around $6.25, but I don't go to the movies anymore.

The magazine that published Lohan's naked pictures got like 4 million hits in a few days, so there is no problem with celebrity interest.

I never knew Christ was on the Titanic. Surely he would hve just walked over the waves.

Is there a corresponding rise in church attendance to compensate for a drop in cinema attendance ?

I love celebrity fashion. When I get my hair cut/styled its always a celebrity that I point to. "Cut it like so and so"

I wish a comedy would win picture of the year, but they don't seem to nominate them that much.
Has a horror movie ever won?

There's one being made which I would tip for next year. It's called

The Day of the Fundies

Its an all action film. Whipping, scourging, burning at the stake, evolutionists being tortured, fiery chariots and other such Christian fare.

I watched about 10 mins, but when they started to recycle the old montages, I gave up. Stewart's intro was shorter then the average late night talkshow intros...

Interesting, but today's newschannels didn't even give details who won what. They only mentioned a few...

I dont care about them at all, (nor do I care about any of the awards shows) but I do enjoy a good film.
The only good thing about the academy is that I have a friend who is a member, so I get free movies from him.

They don't buy the clothes.
The designers lend the clothes to them for free so people will see the stars wearing them, because people's fascination with the stars has not waned one bit.
In fact, sadly, it has been increasing as they pander more and more to the younger generations.

I was just curious....are there any other professions, other than the entertainment industry that gives out awards to themselves?

".....and the Techie for best Computer repair technician goes to.....Macgyver!"

That would be sweeeet...I could thank all the little people...and pretend it meant something.

Seriously...regular folks should get together, and have award shows, just like the Oscars....the plumbers could give awards to each other for the best exposed butt cracks....Pimps could give out awards for most biotches slapped in one night....it would make some great tv.
:)
