Allright, Nirvana really opened up the door for truely good music to become mainstream for a while. (I know they weren't the only ones).

But with Rap and Pop, shit music dominating main-stream culture, and hoardes just buying into it, with real music being neglected or pushed aside, The question comes into mind: When will this end? How will it end? Will real music ever be popular again?

Well, alas, we had our chance with Radiohead, but the effort to turn them into 'The Next Big Thing' basically ended with 'Kid A'. I think it highlights exactly why out culture is so skewed today- a band, arguably the greatest in the world, makes a deep, psycho(logical) record, and while they gain respect from the alternative community, their prospects of affecting society are thwarted. They are on the outside.

Now, it's ironic, but while Radiohead complains about being on the outside, they may have intentionally re-placed themselves there with their recent material. Now, either the brilliant 'Kid A' was too far out to be accpeted, or Thom and the band would rather be far-out than try to reconcile the garbage of pop-culture.

It seems to me that with such an incredibly wealthy, glossed-over society, the weight of tons and tons of sugar and shit, or rather pop and rap, may drown out real music, and force it to become alternative.

Does it disturb anyone here that the only good music has to beconsidered 'alternative' to the mainstream?

If you campare 'Nevermind' to 'Kid A' you find that they are both alternative, but Nevermind is still basically rock. And it could be almost catchy.

Alternative today is deeper and deeper, and because of the utter hopelessnness of pop music, it is adopting a new mentality- most real music must not be accepted if it is heard. It is diginified and defit to resist trying to reconcile an institution that is far beyond repair.

This quote from Thom Yorke, whie referring to the melancholy of his songwriting, really sums it up: "Most people don't go down tunnels unless there is sunshine at the end. This just gives the rest of us more elbow room."

Without the need for good music to be accepted, it matures. I think the quote in my signature also relates ot this.

...but if I had to choose a band for 'Next Big Thing' (whch should be next good thing) It would be Sigur Ros. Although the lead vocalist, Jonsi, can only sing in Icelandic (see, we had to bring Bjork in here some way!) if he ever gives in and sings in english, which I find acceptable seeing as that music is only communication and should do just that, Sigur Ros would explode. They are another Pink Floyd just waiting to happen.

Actually a lot of it is their own made up language mixed with Icelandic.

Yes....even less mainstream than just ol' Icelandic. Jonsi would rather sing to himself than to the mases of pop culture, I think. This period of music is becoming more inward, and is challenging us to be more inward to discover exactly what we should reject.

I never really understood Radiohead, never felt the need to. Maybe they ARE a great band but I don't feel the need to uncover their greatness, I have plenty to keep me occupied.

As far as "the next Nirvana" is concerned... I agree with and love the fact that we're seeing more and more music focusing on personal issues and self-motivated topics. Although there's been a few artists out there for years with this mindset that you may or may not believe to be of this new wave. I've admired Aaron Lewis of Staind and Scoot Ward of Cold for their ability to shun the outside world and fully express their innermost feelings. While these two are pretty popular, there are some others, some of which reside in the "death metal" genre. Regardless, bands like Staind, Cold, Lacuna Coil, Nevermore, Down, etc. are doing their own thing and I respect that. They may not cause an earthquake but I don't need them to be mainstream to enjoy their music.

Rammstein ROCKS!!! I have been wanting to see them, but everytime they are here, I never hear about it until they are gone.

I think it is a joke, and nothing more.

I don't think all apologies and pennyroyal tea were jokes.

They are alright in the noise department, but to me not the next Nirvana.
