View Full Version : The New BattleStar Galactica
CounslerCoffee 01-16-05, 12:53 AM Has anyone seen the new BSG (BattleStar Galactica)? I love it. Maybe even more than Farscape. I love Farscape to death, though. But BSG is really fucking good. If you haven’t watched it by now; I pity you (Except for Thor, because he’s British and hasn’t seen it yet).
Anyways, what I liked:
-The special effects.
-The character development.
-Realistic stress.
-Not hokey like the original.
-The female Starbuck.
-The new Baltar.
-The President.
-The entire plot.
I love BSG. It’s my new favorite show.
Okay, question time. Because I can't just post this with nothing for y'all to respond too.
Which is better? New BSG or the old BSG?
kazakhan 01-16-05, 01:49 AM The old one. The producers of the new one obviously bought the name for marketing purposes. I like the new one though, I just don't think it should be called BSG.
Right, fuck you counsler. It's been shown here since before december. We're up to episode 12 I think. I'm only up to episode 8.
I love it, it makes for good watching. But you get the feeling that it's just plodding along and does have it's boring moments. Nevertheless, it's damned good sci-fi and that's trumps in my book.
Old or New? I'd say new. We have a much better outlook on scifi now than we have ever had. But I do miss the Imperious Leaders. Damn them!
And again, fuck you counsler. I will gouge your eyeballs and urinate in your sockets.
;)
CounslerCoffee 01-16-05, 03:07 AM And again, fuck you counsler. I will gouge your eyeballs and urinate in your sockets.
I should edit this comment, yet I find it amusing.
. Nevertheless, it's damned good sci-fi and that's trumps in my book.
Indeed. Good scifi is hard to come by.
And damn you, Thor, for seeing the first 12 episodes. I hate you. I hope you enjoy this. I just want you to remember that we get StarGate and everything else first. So fucking enjoy it, it will be your last.
Ha fucking ha! We're getting the new episodes of SG-1 before you yanks. Sky One are getting their act together and going gung-ho with all the SciFi stuff. If you download the torrent episodes of Stargate: SG-1 and BSG, you'll notice that most of them are from Sky One. So, british fans, who are far superior to their american underlings, are getting the treatment they deserve.
The thing I really, really like about BSG is the minimal sounds made by the ships in space. Although you can still hear them for effect, the noise is barely audible. About bloody time eh!
CounslerCoffee 01-16-05, 12:43 PM You Brits are a bunch of faggots. You guys started cock chugging Sky One so they'd get you what you want. Americans were sucking dick for Scifi long before you, we are superior.

Yes. I love the music they play while they're in space. Especially during the Olympic Carrier scene. No sound effects, just neat music.
Yeah I love this series too. Even though it just started airing here I've already 'acquired' episodes 1-12 and watched those.
The only complaint I have is that some of the sub plots are a bit crap sometimes, especially a lot of the ones that involve that Gaius dude.
I love the camera work on the special effects though, especially the combat scenes.
Tristan 01-23-05, 01:58 AM Coffee, I concur! I love farscape, but I did make the comment last night that BSG might take 1st place. It is truly the best scifi series ever to grace the tv. I mean, I dont find myself making comments on how they should of done this or that... its just fucking ingenious! Everything from the camera angles, to the dialogue, drama, plot line, switiching from the fleet to caprica! Its all amazing!
Xelios, Im still getting the 11 and 12 ones...

Everything from the camera angles...
Thats what I hate about it, the stupid camera angles. I do not need to see nose hair, the camera does not need to "bounce & wobble" every 2nd scene which makes it look amateur IMO.
Tristan 01-23-05, 11:52 AM The bouncing and wobbling make it all the more better. Its just like babylon 5. Its to get you more into the action by feeling like you are actually there. And it doesnt wobble in every single scene.
Would you prefer a static view of the action from a fixed point? It would just be boring in comparison.
I think its quite ingenious in that respect.

P.S. Coffee, the New BSG is 10X better than the old... no contest.
Speaking of the camera, I love the view of the ships where it is quite far out then it zooms in, it reminds me of some news stories on CNN. Adds that sense of realism.
Tristan 01-23-05, 11:27 PM Exactly!
kazakhan 01-24-05, 09:41 AM Yes I would prefer a more static view, did you miss my point? My own vision doesn't "bounce & wobble" and I bet they don't use the technique as much in the next season. Babylon 5 hardly did it compared to BSG.
Tristan 01-24-05, 03:13 PM Let me rephrase, would you prefer a view of the ensuing battle as if you were on a lawn chair atop BSG? For the entire 3-4 minute battle, not moving whatsoever?
I bet you they use the realism of the bounc and wobble just as much next season. Its simply to give the impression of it being filmed, just like any home video you see.
Yeah, BSG is better than Babylon 5. Though Babylon 5 is like a cult classic and is extremely well done, I think BSG is going to take the cake very soon.
Who wants to have the camera styling of the like of Star Trek when there's fighter vs fighter action going on? I sure don't. When there's a dogfight in BSG, the camera acts as if the whole fight isn't planned, as if the cameraman is reacting as fast as possible to what's happening. Much like they do in sports. It's a brave way to shoot a SciFi show and some people will hate it (see above) but it's definatly the step forward. The whole show has a deliberate feel of everything being unplanned. It's as if the whole series of events are actually being documented, not filmed for our pleasure. I can say without a doubt in my mind that we'll be seeing a lot more of this style appear in movies soon enough.
And no, BSG won't change their style because it is BSG's style.
CounslerCoffee 01-24-05, 09:56 PM Yes, I to love the battle scenes with the wobbling camera. It's an interesting way to shoot space battles... a very cool interesting way...
It's the next "bullet time" if you ask me. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of it in the future.
In BSG I agree it works really well, I only wish there were more Basestar vs Battlestar scenes =)
My Sexy Blue Feet 01-25-05, 03:09 AM (sit down and cries for the injustice of being three months behind everyone else in tv)
Anyone know when BSG or Alantis or even Alias are coming to the wonderful world of Oz?
kazakhan 01-25-05, 06:19 AM Let me rephrase, would you prefer a view of the ensuing battle as if you were on a lawn chair atop BSG? For the entire 3-4 minute battle, not moving whatsoever?
Hmmm...you did miss my point, and I'll say sorry for missing yours the first time around (I only comprehended as far as "I love the camera work"). :o
I'm not talking about battle scenes, I haven't noticed the "camera work" on them so of course I don't have a problem with them. It's the standard stuff like when on the bridge often they'll suddenly zoom in on the Commander and all you can see on screen is his bloody ear. Then when following people, there's to much "bounce" going on like on most home videos. It can look good when theres some action going on but when it's just a bit of dialog...
Wow... 1x13 packs quite the surprise, a few actually. That's all I'll say ;)
I just watched the season finale. DAMNIT! They can't leave me hanging like this!
Anyone know when season 2 starts?
actually BSG is not that good, rather boring to say the least, its one of those things best watched while doing something else.... and im sure coffee only likes them because of the tall blond bimbo.
Tristan 01-25-05, 08:50 PM wait, its only 13 episodes per season?!
Farscape was 22! Most shows are at least near 20, it cant be only 13. Maybe there is an interim period... a few months off.

CounslerCoffee 01-25-05, 10:04 PM Tristan,
Most shows start off with just 13 trial episodes (Like Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and in their second seasons get a full 20. And remember, it takes 80 episodes to make it to nation sydication.
Tristan 01-26-05, 12:01 AM What do you mean it takes 80 to make it to nation sydication?
Btw, just finished watching 12... in the credits it had a preview for the next one that said series finale. Is there a guaranteed 2nd season, or is this really just a pure trial? And if it doesnt do well, they just wont make anymore?
CounslerCoffee 01-26-05, 08:06 AM Tristan:
What do you mean it takes 80 to make it to nation sydication?
It takes 80 for them to rerun it in syndication. I don't know why, it's just a crazy rule.
Brutus1964 01-27-05, 05:47 AM I was a huge fan of the original Battlestar Galactica. I was a teenager when it first ran. I never missed an episode. I loved the Characters and the actors and the story. Many people do not know this but it was actually filled with Mormon doctrine. Glenn Larson the shows creator is LDS and he incorporated a lot of his beliefs in the show. Things like the Counsel of the 12 were likened to the LDS apostles. Apollo and Serena were "sealed" for time and all eternity. The lords of Kobal came from the LDS doctrine on the star kolob. The 12 tribes of planets represented the lost 12 tribes of Israel. The shows concept was the lost 12 tribes returning to Earth.
When I first saw the New Battlestar Galactica I hated it because of the drastic differences. Now that I have seen a few episodes since it came on the Sci-Fi channel it has grown on me a bit. The female Starbuck really does do the part justice, and I like the rest of the crew as well. I don't think the ships or the cylons are as cool as the original but they are pretty good. I don't really like the music however. I wish they had of used a modern version of the same opening music.
kazakhan 01-27-05, 08:40 AM I just watched the season finale. DAMNIT! They can't leave me hanging like this!
I just finished watching it, there has to be a 2nd season...
I think they finished it well too, very unexpected :)
WildBlueYonder 02-07-05, 12:00 AM Many people do not know this but it was actually filled with Mormon doctrine. Glenn Larson the shows creator is LDS and he incorporated a lot of his beliefs in the show. thanks for pointing that out, shows us all that we all need to be writers, so we can spread our brand of propaganda across the airwaves. I'm thinking of writing about a band of Israelite refugees that trek across Asia in 721 BC, then cross over to the Western Hemisphere via the Aleutians.
So when Columbus sails across the ocean blue, the first 'Indian' that mets him, says "oy vey, there goes the neighborhood!"
I'm thinking of calling it, “The Book of Levi bar-Yosef”
changed my mind, I'll call it, "The Book of Levi Little-Feather"
I've been catching them on si fi.. where has everyone been seeing them?
i missed last nights ep i'd like to dl somewhere.
madanthonywayne 02-22-05, 12:37 AM I was a fan of the old BSG, and enjoy the new. I have a few questions about the new BSG. I must confess that I'm still somewhat annoyed over Starbuck being a chick. Also, what the hell's going on on the cylon occupied worlds? There doesn't seem to be much destruction, yet there are no people. I'd like to see some battles between human resistance fighters and the more robotic classic cylons. I mean, it's nice that most of the new cylons are hot chicks, but the metalic versions are cool. Another thing, how is it that a cylon detector is so hard to build? Are these new cylons biological down to DNA? How was the transition made from silicone based organisms to what seem to be brain washed humans? Can the cylons reproduce sexually? Can they interbreed with humans? Are they truly berzerker robots anymore or just one more race of aliens. Do the humanform cylons have any machine components at all?
Zero Mass 02-22-05, 01:57 AM Hey, I am a fan of the show and I would like to take a stab at what you have asked in your previous post. From what I have gleaned from the first 5 or 6 episodes I have seen (I live in America) I have a general answer to most of the questions
I must confess that I'm still somewhat annoyed over Starbuck being a chick.
Just close your eyes and let go of the original series, I really believe that the new series is not a remake, but a redo rather. Treat it as such and just admire the boobies
Also, what the hell's going on on the cylon occupied worlds? There doesn't seem to be much destruction, yet there are no people.
They are occupied. If there are humans still alive they might be in a similar situation as Helo, getting some weird Cylon loving and experiments done on him. Why are they keeping him alive? Sorry, I answered a question with a question...
As for the destruction, I think they used tactical nukes on the planet, maybe people are going to die of starvation. A friend of mine said that the planet Caprica has changed color from green to greenish brown, as part of a change in the weather due to nuclear winter? I am not sure.
I'd like to see some battles between human resistance fighters and the more robotic classic cylons. I mean, it's nice that most of the new cylons are hot chicks, but the metalic versions are cool.
Yeah, taht would be cool. HAve we yet to see a gun battle between cylons and humans? I like the clones and all, but those CGI cylon warriors rock so much...please let Apollo take one or two out, that would rock
Another thing, how is it that a cylon detector is so hard to build? Are these new cylons biological down to DNA? How was the transition made from silicone based organisms to what seem to be brain washed humans?
I think the only way you could tell an infiltrator from a human is if you have a radiation machine like the effect on that planet from the mini-series, the kind that adversly affected the cylon clone's health. That sounds difficult enough to build
I think that the Boomers and other clone agents have to be almost complete clones (minus the fact that their spines glow during sex) and that isn't too far fetched. The robots are finding ways to completely infiltrate our life and the clones seem to work well. It weirds me out that they have sleeper agents like Boomer that don't even know they are cylons.
Can the cylons reproduce sexually? Can they interbreed with humans?
Man I hope not, that would be weird. I imagined them growing human clones like the cylon raiders. A machine mentality to creating life. It is actually quite an interesting concept: Man creates robot in his image, then robot creates man in man's image. Robot then precedes to wipe universe clean of mankind b/c god told them to...
Are they truly berzerker robots anymore or just one more race of aliens.
They are robots, don't let the flesh fool you. They have the mentality, and I hope that their collective consciousnes or ruling structure is explored in later episodes.
Do the humanform cylons have any machine components at all?
Glowing spines? Some kind of tracer beacons maybe? I would gues very little of them is actually metal, that would be extremely easy to pick up on. MAybe they have a silicon base to them, which is why they react differently to radiation. Maybe they are not carbon or water-based lifeforms, who knows. I doubt the shows writers have gone that far in their thinking yet. The mystery about the cylons is keeping me glued to the set.
Why I love this show: THE STAKES ARE HIGH. they keep a count of the human population that went from billions (maybe trillions?) to 50,000 in a few days. Every mistake that the BG crew makes costs the fate of humanity a terrible blow. That is why episodes like Starbuck's training of the new recruits compelling to watch. If they don't cut the mustard then humanity is done for. Same thing with the water episode, if there is no water, humanity dies. If the relationships between the characters are shattered, if the crew falls apart, then humanity dies. If their system of government fails, humnaity dies. Pretty much everything is taken to an extreme, and it makes for a much more exciting show
That is my BSG rant from a new huge fan of the show

Anyone want to bet that this idea is explored in season 2? :)
(Sorry if that gives away the fact it is not explored in season 1)
Tristan 02-22-05, 12:18 PM I think thats the only reason the kept Helo alive was so that they could make a hybrid. And as far as the human-looking cylons are concerned: I bet any money that they are clones from original human DNA. They are in fact humans, just with cyclon programing.
I actually like the fact that Starbuck is a chick. It makes the story more dynamic and more fun. It would be too 1 dimensional if this wasnt so.
In addition, why is it so hard to make a cyclon detector? Its not, thats the point. Baltar could have made one long ago, but unless you've been completely blind, you'd realize that the chick in his head and his natural instincts are pullling him in two different directions... Its like a sock puppet. This is a part of the story that makes it really interesting.

Indeed, that is going to be interesting. He plays the part well too, IMO.

WildBlueYonder 03-24-05, 10:32 PM BSG is in a class by itself, even as a remake it has;
visuals, music, ideas, action, CGI, drama, mystery & human frailties like; politics, weakness, intrigue, betrayal, & No. 6
