Army uniforms get first redesign in 2 decades

Army soldiers are being issued new fatigues with easy-to-use Velcro openings and a redesigned camouflage pattern that can help conceal them as they move rapidly from desert to forest to city in places like Baghdad.

what if you've got to be quiet so as to not give away your position? Won't that velcro make that difficult?

Next new design... casual clothing.

This is probably not that far off.

At first glance at the picture of the new uniform, you can see that they are better suited to fighting in an urban environment than any of the previous camouflage designs were.
It is a good reminder as to where the modern army fights, and who is to be "neutralized".

I came very close to joining the army this last year. I think that not joining is one of the best decisions that I have made so far in my life. And in reflection I can not believe that I was even considering joining.

Suede boots, or 'desert wellies' are standard issue for hot climates usually, so I'm surprised troops are wearing black boots out there?

Don't they get 'ruined' when it rains?

Rains? Like it does every million years? ;)

nope. And you don't have to polish suede. That's part of the rational. And suede is lighter. There'll be a lot of happy grunts.

It's come a long way since I was a troop. Nonetheless, I'm still happy to be a retired private.

How could something that makes you a target possibly qualify as camoflage??

Where do I get one?
I want to clone it and sell mass knock offs with a urban/casual design rather than camoflauge.

Does it cost the government $85/unit when producing on a mass scale?

How many pieces is it by the way? Is there any detailed showcase?
As far as I know, you get: a top, a pair of pants, and a pair of gay shoes.
Did I miss anything?

I saw an artical on it awhile ago, but nothing detailed. The main new feature of the uniforms is that the camoflauge is 'pixilated' rather than splotches of colour. The Canadian army already has that type of thing going on with the uniforms. . . . if only we'd get more stuff right. . .

Oh dear god. How out of touch is this forum with the military?

Yes, the Canadians adopted this style of camoflague a while ago. They call it CADPAT. The American name for the digital camoflague is MARPAT (MARine PATtern) as the US Marines were the first to adopt it.

This camoflague has been proven to be more effective than the current standard US army camoflague and I read in an independant study that it was more effective than the British standand DPM camo. It's just a wander why the US Army has taken so long to pick up on this. And you can bet that the Brits won't be too far behind (in about ten years time, as usual).

And the issue about the US Flag camoflague, there already is one. When operating in certain conditions you obviously don't want a big, red patch to give your position away (i.e. a jungle). This is why they made nation flags that match the colour of the uniform. So there are US flags that come in shades of dull green. This has been common practice since Vietnam and possibly before (the history of patches is hardly my strong point, but I don't ever want to meet the guy who does).

The element of attack is surprise so how about drag?
That'd sure as hell surprise me if a big butch infantryman landed in full drag with heels. I'd be too busy lifting up my chin to shoot the fucker by which time I'd be dead.
