Alright, so far my album of the year award goes to THE MARS VOLTA for their debut album, DE-LOUSED IN THE COMATORIUM, released yesterday.
From their official site:
De-Loused In The Comatorium consists of eight continually shifting tracks which variously recall Led Zeppelin, Fugazi, Jane’s Addiction, Can, Santana, Spirit, ‘70s Miles Davis, ambient Dub… and even At The Drive-In, very occasionally. It’s unapologetically progressive music: unencumbered by genre, unafraid of seriousness, reverberating with new ideas at every turn.
For those who haven't heard of the Mars Volta, their lineup features two former members of At The Drive-In, an amazingly creative post-hardcore band. In addition to the influences mentioned above in their biography, their music brings to my mind other influences such as Radiohead, Rush, and Pink Floyd. It's jaw-droppingly original and damn good music.
Anyways, check out their official site if you'd like. It's pretty awesome.

And for a limited time, you can hear their new album, DE-LOUSED IN THE COMATORIUM, in its entirety on the Rolling Stone site. Go to this page, and click the WMA link at the top.

(So far, 373 listeners have rated the album an average of 4.9 out of five stars - better than the new Radiohead album, for comparison's sake.)
Oh, by the way - the album is retailing for $6.99 at every record store I've checked. Go pick it up!
