I'm writing an analysis on Jack, a character in Golding's Lord of the Flies and I was wondering if any of you have read the book and if so, what you think about Jack?

View Full Version : The Lord of the Flies §outh§tar 05-15-04, 03:01 PM I'm writing an analysis on Jack, a character in Golding's Lord of the Flies and I was wondering if any of you have read the book and if so, what you think about Jack? eddymrsci 05-15-04, 10:26 PM I have read the book several time, watched the movie several more times. I really like the book, it has the best plot of its kind. Trust me, I am the guy you wanna ask this about. So in short, Jack is a very practical and efficient leader of his group, he is a dictator who uses effective methods to physically and mentally control his followers. Despite the fact that not everybody in his tribe is very happy about his "do what I say"-ism, he eventually gets things done, and all members have a sense of security and they all have shelters and consistent food. All these essential qualities were not demonstrated by Ralph. (I have argued with other people in my class about this many times, and no I do not think that either Ralph or Jack is a good leader - they all suck) eddymrsci 05-15-04, 10:27 PM BY THE WAY: Are you doing this for English class too? Hastein 05-15-04, 10:33 PM Jack is a metaphor for Communism/Fascism or even anarchy. The boys fall for his emotional appeal (brutal animalism, tribal unity) rather then Ralph's pluralism. He provides them food where Ralph cannot, and in return they must submit to him. In the end he represents the hunting instinct of man, that which comes out when reason, progress, and rationality must be sacrificed for food. §outh§tar 05-15-04, 10:54 PM Yes, I'm doing this for English class, lol. I think he proves through his success that society and its rules and laws are a farce and that true freedom lies in not being restrained by tenets and convictions of the majority. buffys 05-15-04, 10:54 PM Do your own damn homework! Btw - if I was still in school I'd probably be doing the same thing but it's a good book, worth considering these points for yourself. eddymrsci 05-15-04, 10:55 PM exactly... I agree eddymrsci 05-15-04, 10:57 PM just to clearify something, when I said "I agree", I did not mean I agree with buffys, I agree with the statements made by SouthStar, I did not know that buffys posted when I was replying eddymrsci 05-15-04, 10:58 PM I am in grade 10, what grade are you in §outh§tar 05-15-04, 11:25 PM lol im in 10th too :D P.S. Can't wait for summer!!! eddymrsci 05-15-04, 11:46 PM oh yes, summer... only 20-something days left before final exams... I am so looking forward to summer, no homework or anything. It's the best time of the year! §outh§tar 05-16-04, 02:09 AM exams aren't ... :p ive got two projects to do and its now 11pm at night and i havent even started :( eddymrsci 05-16-04, 02:16 AM 11pm? it's 2am over here... should I assume that you are in the -8 time zone?:) I am doing an essay for biology at 2 o'clock in the morning, that's just pathetic... §outh§tar 05-16-04, 02:23 AM you have to do essays for biology? man.. im taking physics honors next year, not even luck can save me. Dr Lou Natic 05-16-04, 02:23 AM haha yeah I've got to do a fucking shakespeare oral tomorrow and its really fucking hard. You like have to invent 2 characters and explain what their view of one of the real characters was and why. Fuck me, could they make it any wierder? I've had ages to think about it, actually its already late I got an extension, but I just say to myself 'alright you have to do it now' and then I just sit there looking at a piece of paper wondering what the hell to say. I still haven't started. I thought sciforums would help me with school work but it just makes procrastination that much easier. eddymrsci 05-16-04, 02:29 AM yeah essays for bio, isn't that weird? I am supposed write about all these positive and negative effects of herbicides... wow... like I love biology, but I just hate schoolwork. physics doesn't sound too bad, just a lot of formulas to remember. haha of course, I have not even taken physics yet, I am taking it next year, I heard it's similar to math in a lot of ways. Shakespeare eh? the only shakespearean plays I have learned are Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and Hamlet. They are pretty good plays, actually |
