Ever thought there should be a list of every great band ever? Now there is. The List (http://www.ravenhearte.org/thelist.php). A community project to compile a list of the greatest bands of all time.

I don't think there ever could be a single "greatest band ever". Music is an art, and we don't all have the same tastes. Elvis was considered to be the greatest in his day. Eh, he had a nice voice, but for oldies I prefer the Everly Brothers.

What criteria would you use to define 'great'? Retail music sales? Airplay? Arrangements? Lyrics? Orchestration?

Just recently, some magazine decided that U2's "One" was the greatest song ever. It was followed by "I Say A Little Prayer", which they credited to Aretha Franklin (I thought Dionne Warwick did that one?). At number three was "Smells Like Teen Spirit", by Nirvana. I thought their list was a load of crap. It's all 20th century stuff. Like nobody made any music before the 1960's. I didn't see what their criteria was, but I certainly disagreed with their list. I disagreed with the idea of any list that claims one piece of art is "the greatest ever". Now had they said "This is our 'greatest ever' list", that defines that it's their own opinion, and not something we're just supposed to accept.

So come on. What are your personal three 'greatest ever' songs, from any time, and for whatever reason?

1) Greensleeves: It's pretty, it was the defining sound for it's time, and it's certainly got staying power.

2) American Pie: I've never seen so much history wrapped up neatly.

3) Seventy Six Trombones: I like big, loud, brassy pieces. So what?

I could pick from any number of songs, but with my mood right now, these are the ones for today. Tomorrow, the list could change. It's all subjective.

This is on his album Flying in a Blue Dream. The piece is technically very difficult, it's for one guitar and I can only play a bit of it, but... it is what music was intended to be. If beauty has a sound, this is what it sounds like.
