The blast north of Baghdad, hours after a smaller suicide bombing in another Shiite village killed more than 20, suggested Sunni militants are regrouping to launch attacks in regions further away from the capital where security is thinner.

Saturday's blast ripped through a market in Armili around 8:30 am, destroying old mud-brick houses and setting cars on fire. Farmers' pickup trucks drove victims 30 miles to the nearest health facility, in Tuz Khormato.

The U.S. military has confirmed that it is arming Sunni insurgent factions to try to contain al-Qaida in Mesopotamia, according to a report in Monday's New York Times by veteran Iraq correspondent John Burns.

"With the four-month-old increase in American troops showing only modest success in curbing insurgent attacks, American commanders are turning to another strategy that they acknowledge is fraught with risk: arming Sunni Arab groups that have promised to fight militants linked with Al Qaeda who have been their allies in the past."

The whole point of the Coalition fighting "fair" - not killing Iraqi civilians, not arming death squads, not spreading terrorism, not bombing residential areas, not setting up torture prisons, etc - is to enable the Coalition to "win" something worth winning. To succeed in the mission.

The problem with using the enemy's tactics to excuse adopting such tactics oneslef, is that one can only achieve the enemy's "win" that way. And, of course, one becomes that enemy.

I would regard that as a loss, jsut as I regard the Iraq invasion as a failure, despite it having achieved almost all the goals of its perpetrators.
