View Full Version : The Great Debate: What is the best pie?
The Pie Swindler 07-30-05, 01:57 PM So i was walking along one day, merrily minding my own business, when flying ninjas swoop out of the sky and surround me. The leader, who i can identify because he is wearing a white outfit instead of the traditional black one, speaks. The conversation as follows:
Ninja Leader:"I have come from the Kujiama Dojo on the summit of Fuji-san"
Me: "O..k?"
NL: "Our sensei Kenbei Obusai intructed us to find the worlds wisest sage, who would know the location of the Golden Pie"
Me: im just a simple man, i aint got no golden pie
NL: But you have the mark of a PIErate! (refering to my uberreet pie tatoo that i have IRL ;) )
Me: A Pierate? erm.. dont they have, you know... eye patches?
NL: Nono, a PIEEEEEEErate. One who swindles not gold and riches, but pies!
Me: ah yes, you seek the right man
NL: I am honoured *bows*
NL: now listen, we need your help! The fate of the world is in your hands! You must help us solve the great mystery, which will lead us to the golden pie! I ask you, wise one, what IS the best pie?
Me:
NL: Well?
Me: Do you know of what you speak? The ancient masters have searched for millenia to find the arcane secrets of the pies. The best one? We didnt even know pineapple pie existed until last week!
NL: Then how shall we resolve this?
Me: Someone in the world must know!
So we looked and looked for days and days, but could not find a single soul who knew. ALAS! But what luck! We stumble upon the enlightened community of Sciforums.com, and an answer perhaps can be found there! So i ask you, for the sake of the Ninjas and the fate of the world......... What, my friends, is the best pie???
Cottontop3000 07-30-05, 02:20 PM From one day to the next, it is hard to say which is best.
If I had to say, I might, might say cherry cream delight.
Hapsburg 07-30-05, 02:30 PM Apple, no contest.

:m: pie?
siledre 07-30-05, 04:07 PM Fresh Strawberry Rhubarb pie, nothing beats it.
Communist Hamster 07-30-05, 04:08 PM Quite obviously.
Fraggle Rocker 07-30-05, 04:43 PM Like all food it's a matter of the recipe and the skill of the chef. Pie is most certainly not pie. My wife makes a pie with fresh raspberries and cream cheese (I think) that is to die for.
If I have to settle for a good commercial pie, it's either blueberry or coconut custard.

All pie is equal in my eye

actually, your right, homemade pie is by far the best. Commercial pie, prolly blueberry or rasberry for me, or any kinda of meat pie.

I also love banana cream pie with a home-made graham cracker crust.
Warm apple-cinnamon pie topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. You just can't go wrong with that choice.
I can't believe nobody has posted Lemon Meringue Pie. that shit kicks ass.

kazakhan 07-31-05, 05:00 AM Meat pie with tomato sauce :p
Cheese and onion, probably.
Quite like scotch pies too, the ones with mutton in 'em.
BTW.
How come Americans can't tell the difference between pies and cakes?

Sea pie is a French Canadian pie that has beef and chicken in it. It's like meat pie to the next level. It is usually eaten with mashed potatoes, green beand and ketchup.
cosmictraveler 07-31-05, 10:13 AM Key Lime Pie by GourmetSleuth
This is a recipe for "real" Key Lime pie. Real Key lime pie is not green and it does not have a soft "pudding" texture. The pie gets its true pale yellow color from the egg yolks that predominate the ingredient list. And the texture is a "firm custard". Be careful that you don't over-bake the pie or it will be "rubbery". For best results use fresh Key Limes, not bottled juice. The traditional preparation does not put any meringue on the top of the pie. This is a very simple recipe and only takes a few minutes to prepare and 12 minutes to bake.
i n g r e d i e n t s (crust)
16 graham crackers, crushed
3 tablespoons sugar
1 cube (1/4 lb) margerine or butter
d i r e c t i o n s (crust)
Mix the ingredients and press them into a 9" pie plate. Bake in a preheated 350F oven for 10 - 12 minutes until lightly browned. Place on a rack to cool.

i n g r e d i e n t s (pie)
4 large or extra large egg yolks
1 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
1/2 cup fresh key lime juice (approximately 12 Key limes)
2 teaspoons grated lime peel, green portion only
Whipping cream for garnish (optional)
d i r e c t i o n s (pie)
Use an electric mixer and beat the egg yolks until they are thick and turn to a light yellow, don't over mix. Turn the mixer off and add the sweetened condensed milk. Turn speed to low and mix in half of the lime juice. Once the juice is incorporated add the other half of the juice and the zest, continue to mix until blended (just a few seconds). Pour the mixture into the pie shell and bake at 350F for 12 minutes to set the yolks and kill any salmonella in the eggs.

If you are using the whipping cream garnish, prepare the cream. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream.

Key Limes
The Key Lime lime (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle), also referred to as a Mexican Lime, bears a profuse amount of small, thin-skinned, greenish-yellow limes. This juicy lime is known for its distinctive aroma high-acid content. The picture below shows the size and color difference between the more common Persian lime and the Key Lime.

Try our Key Lime Pots de Creme, just like key lime pie, with out the crust. And besides, a good excuse to use those pretty little pot de creme cups.
Key Lime Snow - A light lower fat chilled dessert
Key Lime Chiffon Pie - A delicious fluffier version
Key Lime Crostata - A key lime pie in a buttery tart shell
Key Lime Pound Cake - Topped with a key lime glaze.
Key Lime Sorbet - Uses key lime preserves for extra punch

Spicy meat pie with lots of beef tripe in it. And maybe a tiny bit of mashed potato mixed in, with the skins.
Truly the best pie.

Sounds good, minus the ketchup for me though. I love things like chicken pot pie, etc., but I've never had any that is homeade. Just the store bought frozen kind.
Dee Cee Where are you from? I don't think we are as used to "meat" type pies as others like the English. I think we associate pie mainly with something that has a squishy, fruity filling, like a meat pie except without the meat, and use the word cake for things that have a different consistency, more centered around a flour based bread type thing. Then again, we call cheese cake, which is more like a pie, cake. Go figure. :D
We'd probably call something with cheese and onion in it a quiche, I think, but maybe a pot pie too.

aran_en_dunedain 07-31-05, 09:24 PM while i respect all your opinions on the best pie, they are just that: opinions. I think the time has come to consider the TRUE meaning of "best pie"....and to find (drum roll...) the real best pie. It surely is not of mortal fruit/meat/ketchup/ect...but of celestial ingreidiants of divine and cosmic goodness!
but being the humble King of the Dunedain that I am, i cannot deduce what this "truely best pie" is...so what, praytell, do all u think of it?

James R 08-01-05, 12:49 AM From another site:
Unique to the state of South Australia, the pie floater is a minced meat pie floating is a sea of thick split pea soup and topped liberally with tomato sauce, which is more savoury that American ketchup. Typically, they are only available extremely late at night from caravans parked around inner Adelaide and individuals who have usually had far too much to drink consume them.
An unaesthetic element to the whole proceedings is the excellent colour and texture that they add to the vomit some time later.
Not necessarily my vote for the best pie, but an unusual one. And yes, I've had one, late at night, from a caravan parked in inner Adelaide. And I didn't even vomit afterwards!
