so for my english class i had to write a song about the book The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck. here's what i came up with...

E-I-E-I-Okies (to the tune of Old MacDonald Had a Farm)

Old Tom Joad he had a farm
    E-I-E-I-O
And on that farm there was poor soil
    E-I-E-I-O
With a landlord here, and a farmer there
    Failed crop, pay it up
    Everybody’s out of luck
Old Tom Joad he lost his farm
    E-I-E-I-O

Young Tom Joad he killed a man
    E-I-E-I-O
And he left prison on parole
    E-I-E-I-O
With a preacher here, and a neighbor there
    “Where’d they go” “I don’t know”
“Probably off to make some dough”
Young Tom Joad he found his clan
    E-I-E-I-O

They got their kicks on Sixty-Six
    E-I-E-I-O
And Grampa he died of a stroke
    E-I-E-I-O
With a pit stop there for a quick repair
Buy a part, fix it good
Keep on going down the road
    California’s getting close
    E-I-E-I-O

Then granma she got sick and died
    E-I-E-I-O
    The Joads reached California soon
    E-I-E-I-O
With a work camp here, and a sheriff there
    “You’re a red” “No I’m not”
“Come with me or you’ll get shot”
Casy got sent off to jail
    E-I-E-I-O

They settled in a gov’ment camp
    E-I-E-I-O
And in the camp there were no cops
    E-I-E-I-O
With a flush can here and a dance night there
“Work is gone” “Cash is low”
“Pack your stuff we gotta go”
The Joads they left the gov’ment camp
    E-I-E-I-O

They drove up to the cotton fields
    E-I-E-I-O
And at the fields there was a strike
    E-I-E-I-O
With the preacher there for a good-luck prayer
“He’s their chief” “Make him dead”
“Put a pickaxe in his head”
Tom watched Casy die that night
    E-I-E-I-O

    Tom he couldn’t stick around
    E-I-E-I-O
    Because he’d killed another man
    E-I-E-I-O
So he told his ma she should not be scared
    “Anybody needs a hand”
“Well you should know that I’ll be there”
And Tom Joad up and walked away
    E-I-E-I-O

and i sang that in front of the entire class, for a grade. not sure what i got ont it. im guessing it was an A, though...

    If you're 16..

You should learn to appreciate intelligent thoughtful writers such as steinbeck, and hence not degrade his songs to meaningless kindergarten songs.

    A song....
I haven't read Steinbeck for a good 20 years. But this is based on what I remember :

I'm sorry, man, but you didn't know
Why you couldn't stay, why you had to go
    why
I had to be the one
    Who did it

    Because you were my friend

    They didn't know
    why

    You didn't know
    Why

    But you were my friend.

    (I don't know why)
    It had to be me.

    My friend.

I liked Cannery Row. Grapes of Wrath was long, but the part with the old man on breastfeeding teenager action was worth it.

    Sort of.

On the topic of mixing genres in classical literature

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains."

It's an opening line that might make Jane Austen turn in her grave - or rise from it with her arms out-stretched.

For writer Seth Grahame-Smith has taken Austen's Regency classic and turned it into Pride and Prejudice with Zombies.

The novel, which uses the the vast majority of Austen's original text, is being touted as the first mainstream literary "mash-up".

Keep it up and there could be a career in this for you kid

Grapes of Wrath may have more relevance to our children given the economic conditions in which we are facing.

I didn't appreciate the book in HS until years later when I looked it over again.
