View Full Version : The Effect of Reagans Death on the Upcoming Election?
I hate to say it, but I think Reagans death could be enough to give Bush the edge. Those people sitting on the fence, leaning towards kerry might be tempted to think that if he gets another term, he can solve a lot of the problems he's created by 'following the path'.
Thoughts?
Well lets see how big a media event the funeral becomes.
could be bad though.

hypewaders 06-06-04, 11:18 AM Dubya is unlikely to compare well to Reagan among paleoconservatives, or among American nationalist reactionaries. I haven't watched major media for a few days, but if they air clips of Reagan, they will only highlight his much higher intelligence, literacy, and leadership ability as compared with Bush II. As to the larger audience for American wistfullness about the Gipper, we Americans will not in this moment be able to suppress a look back on the part of others, that will include the dirty dealings of Reagan in our name, including Iran-Contra, the Taliban, and Reagan's now clearly-revealed support for terrorism in South America- All of which continue to plague us today in their aftermath.
Also, Ronald Reagan faded away gradually, and had already rode into the sunset years ago. There isn't that much twilight glow left for the Bush Administration to bask in.
otheadp 06-06-04, 11:20 AM i was surprised to see FOX news on my TV today... i guess all FOX channels broadcasted their news section on all their other channels.
for the 10 minutes i saw, ppl there compared Raegan to Bush, how similar they are
there's obviously a difference - Raegan could speak English and was "the great communicator"
but their visions are very similar.
they view the world as 'good' and 'evil', they have similar economic strategies (except Bush's economy is picking up already and Raegonomics took the US into a recession), and they confront threats head on. for Raegan it was the "evil empire", for Bush it's fascism in Islamic countries and the fascist idiologies that dominate and control many parts of the Islamic world
Raegan's death will play a big role in playing the election into Bush's hands
paleoconservatives,
:D
Sometimes I miss the paternal right.
But not often

Anybody up for a conspiracy? ;)
Blacked out limos cruising through the night towards the Gippers Twilight Home.
A smudged palmprint across the front of his incontipad and a single grey hair found beneath his brittle nails.
George killed the Gipper!!
Spin it fast and spin it now.
We could just turn this thing around!

hypewaders 06-06-04, 12:53 PM Hurry! They could put all evidence out of reach in the Reagan Mausoleum soon, and then we'll be left watching the same scene on every channel: Dubya atop the new monument, reviewing the troops on Inauguration Day. -Not!
Undecided 06-06-04, 02:01 PM I think Reagan’s death may energize some elements of the conservative right. But I don’t think Bush will get much out of this, most people in the US really don’t see the connection. Bush should actually should stay away from Reagan, Reagan at least was truly a “uniter not a divider.” Bush modeled himself after simplistic Reagan, and that has proven to be a complete and utter failure. At least Reagan knew how to successfully manipulate the media, and knew how to use rhetoric’s correctly. Bush is a very poor example of a Reagan-ist. So I don’t see this causing anything for Bush.
JustARide 06-06-04, 05:27 PM I have yet to hear anyone refer to Bush's wit as "rapier."
hypewaders 06-06-04, 08:22 PM But we're all slowly realizing how witless his raping is.
They might be able to capitalize on the "Won one for the Gipper" theme.
StarOfEight 06-07-04, 08:20 AM Bush can barely speak, but he does have a chimp-like charisma. Kerry can speak, but not cleanly, and he has about as much charisma as a Jello mold. My disgust with the man aside, Reagan ooze charisma. Karl Rove's the Beltway Machiavelli, and I think he'll be able to turn this campaign into the Gipper's Third Term.
Although, because Bush has an additional five weeks to raise money, none of this really matters.
