This movie has been shunned by critics over the last decade and a half. They say that this film was were Mel Brooks lost his touch.

In my opinion I say they are wrong. He appealed to a wider audience with this film and his gags were either very clever or so stupid that they were funny.

I love it. It's one of my favourite movies.

For those who have not seen it, it is a Sci-Fi spoof that mainly pokes fun at Star Wars but it also has a few jokes concerning Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, Alien, etc.

Some quotes :-

Overly Camp Officer: Turn around...*gasp* These aren't them, YOU'VE CAPTURED THEIR STUNT DOUBLES!

Princess Vespa: I don't have to take this, I'm rich!

Dark Helmet: What's the matter Sanderz, CHICKEN?
Colonel Sanderz: *in a chicken voice* Prepare ship! *ahem* Prepare ship for Ludacrous speed!

A great film. A little too self-conscious, and a hair to the deliberate. But the film rated 3 out of 4 stars locally when it played in cinemas. The jokes, of course, are as classically Jewish as any.

Critical "shunning" of this film is an example of why I agree with Hemingway on the count of critics: Let them do their jobs, it keeps them out of jail.

I see your schwartz is as big as mine...

The part where dark helmet is playing with dolls is good, too.

I remember in school when Space Balls first came out, we had an assembly where we were going to see "space balls." We were all psyched. Finally, something good at school. Turned out it was some stupid thing to do with real balls. It was so dumb that I don't even remember exactly what it was. I only remember being extremely disappointed.

Ah the Jewish jokes! I should really watch this film again.

Barf: Funny, she doesn't look Druish.

3 out of 4 stars is not bad at all. I just wish I was ol enough to have seen movies like this at the cinema.

I thought the bit with the transforming maid was particularly Judeo-New York.

And Moranis ... in the Jewish term, his performance was sublime.

And we have to remember of the critics--when an older producer like Brooks gets all sarcastic about the state of the film business, the critics always say he's losing touch.

I mean, somebody had to do the Magritte moment in response to video rental. I just can't believe Brooks wasn't recycling the joke when he got to it.

We're men... We're men in tights... We run around the forest looking for fights...

The only problem with Mel Brooks is he's too apt to break into song. I'd have to say Young Frankenstein is his best parody. Turns out he originally didn't want to do it. It was Gene Wilder's idea. He sold Mel on it while doing Blazing Saddles. Ok, maybe that's the best parody he ever did. "Nobody move or the nigger gets it!"

I like a lot of Brook's work but 'spaceballs' left me cold.
You want sci-fi and comedy?
Dark Star is the only film you'll ever need.

And then the bomb said "let there be light!"

i loved spaceballs as a kid, sci-fi comedy is pretty rare but the funniest show ever? nah, not even the funniest show that year. Brooks' humor was just too predictable by the time he made spaceballs. You could see most of the jokes coming a mile away. That being said I own the DVD so I do think it's good, just not fantastic.

But I'm not a big fan of over-the-top humor so it may just be a matter of taste.

hehe ... Spaceballs ... that was a classic. I couldn't stop laughing when I first saw it. This is one of my favorite scenes in the movies ... I'm sure you all which scene this is.

Looking at a video of the movie Spaceballs after loosing track of Lonestar. At this instance, they are looking at themselves at the exact moment they are filming
Dark Helmet: What the Hell am I looking at?! When does this happen in the movie?!
Col. Sandurz: Now! You're looking at "now," sir. Everything that happens now is happening "now."
Dark Helmet: What happened to "then?"
Col. Sandurz: We passed it.
Dark Helmet: When?
Col. Sandurz: Just now. We're at now "now."
Dark Helmet: Go back to "then."
Col. Sandurz: When?
Dark Helmet: Now.
Col. Sandurz: Now?!
Dark Helmet: Now!
Col. Sandurz: I can't.
Dark Helmet: Why?
Col. Sandurz: We missed it.
Dark Helmet: When?
Col. Sandurz: Just now.
Dark Helmet: When will "then" be "now?"
Col. Sandurz: Soon.
Dark Helmet: How soon?
Spaceball: Sir!
Dark Helmet: What?
Spaceball: We've identified their location.
Dark Helmet: Where?
Spaceball: It's the moon of Vega.
Col. Sandurz: Good work. Set a course and prepare for our arrival.
Dark Helmet: When?
Spaceball: Nineteen-hundred hours.
Col. Sandurz: Buy high noon tomorrow they will be our prisoners.
Dark Helmet: WHO!!
