View Full Version : The Argument: Marilyn Manson Is The Only True Artist Today
theonlyguyever 07-07-03, 09:33 AM You laugh?

Your thoughts are welcomed, of course.
goofyfish 07-07-03, 10:38 AM MM is a 90's version of Alice Cooper without talent.
:m: Peace.
He was a good artist. Keyword was. He has lost the talent he once held so proud. He was a metophorical genius who sang about what he considered true, but now with his latest work he has lost his magical touch. No feeling, no passion and no thumbs up
DarkEyedBeauty 07-07-03, 11:42 AM Art is in everything. This is all relative to the way in which you define art. But art is definately something beautiful. Whether is is aesthetic or something that inspires beautiful thoughts in you. I find nothing about MM beautiful but his spirit.
sargentlard 07-07-03, 04:23 PM Many find him a hack and many find him a visionary. I, personally, find his image laughable but i do respect the artistic value of his work.

But you do admit that this is subjective. I'd submit that the average American would not find Joachim Luetke or H.R Giger's art to inspire beautiful thoughts.
However, this doesn't invalidate their art, does it?
"The artist" says Leo Sacher-Masoch "is shaped above all by life"
This is what interests me most about Marilyn. Like Nietzsche, he created a persona that was greater than he was. Brian Warner, the wormboy and picked-upon geek, created a personality that incorperated and transcended his own, an antichrist superstar who howled defiantly at his former tormenters.
Unlike Nietzsche, Brian Warner IS Marilyn Manson.
Manson, like Nietzsche and Sacher-Masoch, is an artist of the Self. Unlike Nietzsche and Masoch, he refuses to confine himself to partially-lived fantasys.
Now, that aside, is Manson anything more than creative? That is, does his work exhibit technical brilliance?
I'd say yes. While much of his work (especially the disappointing "Mechanical Animals") is, instrumentally, standard rock and roll, he does have some amazing moments. Tom Skold's keyboarding on TGAOG is simply amazing. Before that, Twiggy's skill was....fucking sweet.
Alice Cooper? Please. While I like a lot of Alice's work, Alice Cooper is a stage act. Other than being a bit "shocking" (whoo whoo), Cooper is standard rock and roll, both instrumentally and lyrically. I can't see him writing anything like "Cake and Sodomy" or the "Fight Song".
Manson isn't the only true artist around. However, he's definitely the best mainstream music has to offer.

Kinda on the same page.......What about Trent Reznor. I think he offers more artistic talent than manson, at least one must admit he is very talented.

Am i the only one who loved his collaboration with David Bowie???
fadingCaptain 07-07-03, 05:58 PM I find his music extremely boring and predictable.
No, the true artists aren't the ones posing on entertainment tonight. They are the ones making creative music in their basements that doesn't pander to the corporate conglomerates.

reznor is brilliant.. manson tries way too hard.. too image-driven imo
I'm a huge NIN fan.. and all that could have been tour was awesome
DarkEyedBeauty 07-07-03, 07:42 PM Wasn't Manson Reznor's protege? And then Reznor ditched him because he was getting out of control.

:D :D :D
I think this is fitting.

When's the last time Trent released something more than a remix? The operative word is "current".
That said, Trent's a fucking genius.
Bebelina 07-07-03, 08:45 PM Manson is a good true artist, but not the only one, there are so many out there...

in jan 2002 he released a double live dvd set called And All That Could Have Been.. it's excellent.. I caught a couple shows on this tour and they were amazing.. the dvd set is worth getting
as a huge NIN/reznor fan I anxiously await new material from him..but lately he's been remixing everyone from bowie to p diddy
Johnny Bravo 07-08-03, 02:47 PM He's a clown and rips off other clowns (Bowie, Cooper, bondage sex shops.goth and death metal). His videos are kinda interesting but so what?
man_of_jade 07-08-03, 05:32 PM Artist? Maybe.
True Artist? I dont think so.

Marlyin Manson isn't an act?
What's up with the name, makeup, transgender plastic suit, etc, then?
As for any "superior" lyrical content to his alleged "mentor", I have but one thing to offer:
"We're all stars, now... ...In the dope show"
At bottom, I feel neither of the two offers much more than the trappings of snide, dated modes of outrageousness.
Anything "profound" which they might, or might have produced is almost accidental.
I'd say Alice seems more campy than Marylin, although this would seem to me to have more to do with the level of "outrage" which was tolerated in the '70s compared to today's multimedia cesspit...
He was apparently regarded as the same sort of indicator of the imminent end of all good things civilized that MM is by some today.

Touche.
I can't stand gothmetal. Most everything you hear blasting through a headseat wrapped around a pimply head on a fat goth you must steer away from like a disease.
Mason is a poser, a clown, a phony, a dabbler in arts and rock shock. Ever seen him from the side? Without all that goo he's got the classic mug of our common high school geeks- long nose, no chin and dog eyes. He most certainly rips off the colorful talents of Bowie and Cooper and to some extent our short negro friend Prince.
His music, if we can by any measure call it that, falls prey to the modern habits found in earshit: make the tune as loud as possible and rub your butt on your fan's face. That most certainly makes Benjamins.
This noisy bullshit of our modern rockers mindlessly screaming sounds more like men giving birth than it does art.
LinkinPark for one.
