according to relativistic particle mechanics, a particle traveling faster than light (a tachyon) would exhibit some strange properties. if would speed up as it lost energy, for example.

people have said in this thread that it would travel backwards in time, but i am not sure this is correct. if i use the naïve time dilation formula to see what happens to time in the reference frame of this particle, i must conclude that time in this reference frame is imaginary. i do not know how to interpret what that means, physically. probably i wouldn t see the particle experiencing time at all, like the case for the photon.

we already know particles that are going backwards: the antiparticle.

what is true is that if i see the particle depart from point A and arrive later at point B, there are normal slower than light people who will see it arrive at point B before it departs point A. so my friend would conclude that it is traveling backwards in time, but i would still see it moving forwards in time.

however, particle physics is not a correct description of the universe, according to modern theories. all matter moves in quantum waves, and in this setting, the tachyon is a little different. a tachyon in quantum field theory is a particle traveling away from a maximum of some background potential.

this potential had better be bounded below, or else the vacuum is unstable, and the entire universe will disappear in a flash. small quantum perturbations from this maximum exhibit exponential growth (instead of oscillations like any well behaved wave), and blow up until the field is near some minimum, at which point the field acts like a normal particle. the field is not able to transfer energy faster than light, even when the particle is near this maximum.

from the context of quantum field theory, i would say that no particles can move faster than light, not even tachyons.

thefountainhed

gendanken,
Perhaps it was intended, in anycase, when time and interest permits, I shall change.

James,
Quantity must count. I cannot nominate a poster who has 30 posts even if they are all great posts. I simply do not have the time to go through all the members. The quantity simply limits the amount of posts I have to toil through. And yes, quality does count more than quantity.

Blue,
'exterior justification"? I am unsure what you mean by that. I have the awards simply as a gesture to those posters who take the time and effort to come up with good posts, etc. And no it is as objective as I could be within the context. Why else do I nominate WANDERER, when I think he is psychologically an insecure kid?

Yeah spurious is right if he's talking about the muslim.
And obsessive generalisations is his middle name, if I wanted to show someone what an obsessive generalisation looked like I'd direct them to proudmuslims posts.
I think that was poor form on your part hed, picking him, and just as an aside I still don't understand how you can try to justify your selections as unbiased. I mean you are just a human being. You're not a machine that can select on purely objective factors.
I still think members voting for nominees makes more sense, yes it might be a popularity contest, but at least that is a broad all encapsulating thing, what you have is a list of people who's posts you have read lately.
like seriously its not worth much.
How much of this forums happenings could you possibly monitor? (keep in mind I will judge you harshly by your response to that question, ie, too much and I lose all respect for you etc)

Oh and I honestly have no desire to seriously be involved in this, it makes me laugh that i even have to say this, but i just know you'll think I'm pissed that I didn't get nominated.

monkey said PM is obsessive?? always judging muslims by the "effect" and turning a blind eye to the "cause". The anti Islam sewer fodder is not extreme ignorance?? Is the constant tirade of misconceptions, preconceptions, fallacious aruments not obsessive?. Always the case, the anti Islam biggots get away with murder, with any manner of filth and offensive diatribe, yet a Muslim sticks up for his beliefs, and tries to offer a counter to the bullshit all of a sudden you guys put up your hand in a "jerry springer, talk to the hand coz the face aint listening" type fashion.

Show how.

I think that was poor form on your part hed, picking him, and just as an aside I still don't understand how you can

try to justify your selections as unbiased. I mean you are just a human being. You're not a machine that can select on purely

objective factors.
No, I thought it through and in my viewpoint, it would have been dishonest to not select him; seeing as there aren't any

profound disadvantages in his selection, I chose him. In response to your "aside", I have not made the claim that my

selections aren't subjective. In fact, I attepted to illustrate how subjective this "awards" thread could be, in the previous. I however have a criteria to abide by that excludes personal preferences--like/dislike.

I still think members voting for nominees makes more sense, yes it might be a popularity contest, but at least that is a broad all encapsulating thing, what you have is a list of people who's posts you have read lately.
A nominees listing depending on the popular vote would not be a reflection of the overall forum. Most people limit their reads to a few subforums, and yes, it would be a popularity contest with morons having multiple nicks voting for themselves. Imagine Counselor as the best poster.

like seriously its not worth much.
Perhaps not, but then again, that is irrelevant. I made an attempt, and it stands for itself.

How much of this forums happenings could you possibly monitor? (keep in mind I will judge you harshly by your response to that question, ie, too much and I lose all respect for you etc)
It's simple really: the pool of posters with a high post count (within the alloted period) remains pretty stable. And yes, I actually do go through threads I may not have read before because they bored or were not interesting to me-- considering the poster under consideration possesses all the prerequisites.

I'm just fuckin with you for the most part hed, you're a fairly awesome dude, but my main points have to be considered here, can't you see how this just doesn't work?
I actually think this is fine. Do you have a poster I excluded whom you think is a good poster, and matches the critera given?

i just think there are enough phony award ceremonies on this planet, why not have a legit one
Most award shows are "phony" mostly because they rely on popularity, and unknowlegeable judges.

the comment that I am a "stupid troll" is "udgemental unsolicited unwelcomed approach in labeling posters without authority or permission," and amusing and quite incorrect. Worst Poster
Criteria;
1. Seems to make no effort to take anyone elses points, or the very raw concept of logic, into account while posting or constructing ideas in his/her head.
2. Makes others feel as though they are dealing with an internet prankster and/or has ideas and makes points that no one can believe are intended to be serious, they must however be attempting to be serious in reality.
3. Forces others to start observing them as they would an animal and rather than address them as they would a normal poster openly comment on how bizarre their behaviour is to eachother within the thread of worst posters exploits.
In other words worst poster unintentionally forces a debate to devolve into a discussion on how terrible they are at being a human being.
Note; It is very important that this wasn't worst posters intention, instead they must continue seriously and honestly addressing the topic at hand, but his/her views must be so obscure, ridiculous and/or illogical that the rest of the thread stops and just talks about the strange creature that is worst poster
4. As implied above, must be ignorant to an extreme degree
* bonus points if other posters can not believe a person could possibly be this ignorant and assume the poster is a joke being played on them
* double bonus points if on top of this the poster is arrogant and cocky with a know it all presence
* super double bonus jackpot if poster uses own ignorance of subject matter as argument against subject matter.

Went the curly haired lamb who'd be nothing without people to show off her 'faith' to.

Care explain to me your humor/wisdom?, I don't think you have earned with me the previledge of joking/pouring wisdom around without making a point.

I have my suggestions, but I don't want to point to the obvious.

I don't care if I've "earned" anything from Flores.

Its only this losing battle I have with Christians, Evangelicals, Baptists, Methodists, Catholics, Muslims...in short all the little lambs in this world clinging to God that keep thinking their faith comes from heaven and not the fact that the neighbors are watching and doing the same things.

you know nothing.
Your western-euro centric biassed catholisism based definition of religion equates to nothing
Your rationalisiation and conceptualisation of what muslims or anyone else believes or does not believe equates to nothing.
Your understanding of religion does not fit with islam, your understanding of faith is as clumsy and primitive as your insults.

What you define as religion equates to nothing.
what you define as faith equates to nothing.
what you perceive about any of these matters is nothing.

newsflash:
Islam isnt a religion, and certainly not by your cack handed definition.

And how clumsy and primitive of me to sniff out the lamb in you to think so.

These are experimental questions you can't figure out from your armchair, little boy, and so long as you sit there thinking you know what I believe, how I believe it and why.........then you're the big fat nothing that knows nothing.

Islam isnt a religion, and certainly not by your cack handed definition.
But it certainly is by your actions in here.

You're like the little patriot that jumped to put his body in front of his flag becuase behold! there's someone with a gun about to shoot the stripes of its 'body'. Gasp.

Ha-ha.

what it is , is beyond any pigeonhole you could ever place it in.

Religion, secularism, faith, theocracy, all bullshit semantic.
Bullshit nonsensical terminology that has been defined by catholics/prots/pagans within their western euro centric biassed view of the world and beyond.

pathetic.

even the muslims have fallen for the trap of defining their beliefs by the terminology of the wasps.

Do you steal for a living or as a habit? Consider earning your ways sometimes.

One word of advice, although you haven't earned it. Let everyone sleep on the side that pleases them. Sleep comes from within my dear, not by making everyone quite the hell up to allow you to concentrate on how you can go to sleep.

What is it then? Do tell.

I was educated by an infamous and apparently, now absent (and sorely missed IMO) poster - Allah's Mathematics, or Ghassan Kanafani.

Islam is a deen (http://www.albalagh.net/kids/understanding_deen/).

Basically, it's a religion on steroids.. inclusive of every aspect of the life of the member.
