View Full Version : Thanks Dave!
Hi Porfiry
Its been the best of times and the worst of times, so to speak.
We've had our differences over the years, but that's all water under the fridge.
I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the years of service you've provided for Sciforums. Although it does sound like you've got your hands full and you probably won't continue to finance this site, it was a pleasure to come here, free of charge, and post whatever I wanted, much to the chagrin of a great many members here.
Thanks again. The very best of luck to you!

mis-t-highs 07-18-05, 03:49 PM I'll second that, lets all give our dave (porfiry) a pat on the back he deserves it.
yes you have built a wonderful haven for our crazy/inspired ramblings.
when I think of dave shutting down sciforums I can't help but to think of 2001 a space odyssey when Hal was trying to talk dave out of shutting him down.
invert_nexus 07-18-05, 05:46 PM Ha!!
"Stop... Dave... My mind is going... I can... feel it... Dave... I can.. feel it... Stop... Dave... Hello gentlemen, I'm the Hal-9000...."
Heh.
Anyway.
Yeah.
Thanks for everything, Dave.
I hope that we manage to pull it together somehow, but if not, then this past year of my life will live on in my memory for the rest of my life. Both as a source of inspiration and nostalgia.
All things must pass on this Earth. This is inevitable. But it is never a happy passing.
Especially when one considers the medium of stone.
I would carve my words on pillars of stone ten miles high.
I suppose it's foolish to think of any digital medium being permanent.
A lesson to be learned in this.
whitewolf 07-18-05, 07:26 PM Ugh, there's no place like sciforums!
Question:
Why is Porfiry's join date later than a number of other members'?
whitewolf 07-18-05, 08:53 PM Because he was under a different username before that. What, you think there are no sock puppets here?

Sock puppets?
That's kind of what I expected. What was his name before?
(Sock puppets?!?)
vslayer 07-18-05, 09:13 PM davew, but i think there might have been some before or after that
certified psycho 07-18-05, 09:17 PM Thank you dave for sucking me out of total and complete boredom to a brain oozing site.
sargentlard 07-18-05, 10:06 PM What?...is he finally pulling the plug and saving his beer money for....beer?
Godless 07-18-05, 11:09 PM What it's the end?....
I can't imagine the net without sciforums, That only means I have to find another home, to hang my hat. Thanks to the closings of lately I've found such places, though there are not Sci, it's different, it's not the same, much lame on the same crap we all talk about. Life in general.
Most sites want it calm down, not too much ad-hominem, (which is fun btw) and the heck with flame wars, at least Dave understood the pleasure of calling someone a dick! to his face, and was liberal enough to allow our flame debate style. Heck I will miss it, If I win the Lotto Dave, can I open a formerlyknownassciforums website?. LOL.. Thanks a hole lot.. now I'm in tears.(sih)....Bye, bye Sciforums....
But I'll keep coming back till it completely is gone :)

hypewaders 07-19-05, 01:00 AM Sf has been my first, and maybe last, dabbling with a message board. Everywhere else I've wandered in Boardland since the fadeout started here, things have seemed more sterile, and the crowd less bright.
Maybe in some post-Sf future our more stimulating thoughts can meander together again, through an even better interface, with total recall of where we've been together. I hold out hope that communications are becoming so cheap and universal, that our free, collaborative, consultative, and sparring thoughts will someday be more resistant to being snuffed out by individual disinterest.
Thanks for the memories, Da...

I think the worst part about sciforums potential end is that there will be no place for amateur physicists to come and get their ideas shot down. thats why I came here. I had all kinds of ideas and needed someone, who knew more about them than I did, to put holes in them. (in)sanity said he would take over sciforums if it were shut down, so it may not be lost at all, just under new management. I have not talked to dave (profry) about it very much though.
§outh§tar 07-19-05, 02:20 PM What?...is he finally pulling the plug and saving his beer money for....beer?
All $3000 of it in nickels and pennies
tablariddim 07-20-05, 03:46 PM Dave why don't you just try and drum up a few more sponsors and let them stick their ads on your site? I'm sure we could all live with a bit of commercialism on the site rather than no site. How about retailers of computers, software, cameras, memory chips, games etc etc?
mis-t-highs 07-20-05, 04:51 PM or we could all donate a few pounds, dollors, euros, etc once a year, to keep it going.
if everybody donated a £10 ($17.39c us)($23.03c aud)(14.32 euros)thats less then 3 pence (under 5 cents us)(under 7 cents aud) (under 4 euros)a day, it's got to be worth that.
Firefly 07-20-05, 05:00 PM I only come here irregularly, but I tried a couple of times when it was down recently. Is sciforums in real danger of closing?? :(

Apprently so. Instead of being greatful a lot of the members are being prissy little douchers because the site keeps going down to rapid expansion and the berating is bumming porfiry out.
It's sorta of like the rise and fall of Guns N Roses but not.
Umm - Dave has said very little one way or the other - we don't know whether he cares or not.
And paying? All the time there are alternate similar sites then donations in any significant amounts seems to have an unlikely long term future. As I said elsewhere I doubt money is the real issue.
sargentlard 07-20-05, 11:06 PM It's drugs isn't it Cris....it use to be about the science, the thrill of presenting a thread on digital stage with long posts and the thrill of the fans shouting your name after you proved or refuted a theory....
but somewhere drugs got hold of Dave didn't they....
It use to be about the sceince man...the science...now it's all about dimebags and coke lines laid on a dirty glass in a hookers house....
you've changed porfiry, you've changed.
geistkiesel 07-24-05, 07:17 PM Hey Porfiry, is Sciforums "for sale"? If so, what's the price? Make me an offer I cannot refuse.
