So, um, I've always been interested in astronomy but I don't own a telescope yet. Is there something simple I can get without spending too much cash? What would you recommend?
Seriously consider a pair of 7 x 50 binoculars or bigger (20 x 100 ?) , if you haven`t gotten a pair already. As for telescopes a 2"refractor ( or better still a 3") with about a f7 focal length would be good for general use and portability. A decent tripod is also a must. There are always bargains to be had second-hand , you may pick-up a decent 4" short-length refractor for the same price...
