For any that care to believe that technology rules and really believe that we'll soon have a black box that can beat a Beagle's nose, just another area where nature beats technology: Mammal Adjunct to the Small Unmanned MCM Ship
None of the minefield reconnaissance systems discussed thus far are capable of detecting buried mines, yet mines buried by natural means are likely to be encountered in those littoral regions where shoals are forming. Currently, only the Mk-7 mammal system is capable of detecting and placing charges to neutralize buried mines. Combining the Mk-7 with a small, enhanced-capability MCM vessel could provide a system that can be launched from over the horizon, that operates in sea states 3 to 4, and that is able to detect, classify, and place timed neutralization charges against moored, bottom, and buried mines into the surf zone. Just in case you're not sure what they're talking about, it's the use of dolphins to detect and destroy mines from a 'Mine Counter Measures', MCM, vessel.
