A quick Google search reveals that there is lots of MSDS info for tea tree oil.

According to the MSDS the potential acute health effects for tea tree oil are for skin and eye contact, not for inhalation. No potential chronic health effects have yet been found. The first aid measures listed for inhalation are:

“If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical attention.”

This is merely the general standard MSDS paragraph used when there is no specific inhalation danger.

So the bottom line appears to be that the oil can be a contact irritant but poses little inhalation risk.
