Has anybody out there heard of satellites traveling in tandem pairs? Monday, April 5, 8:40 pm PST, we observed two satellites passing north-south, directly overhead Copalis Beach, on the Washington State coast in the Pacific Northwest US. It was an exceptionally clear evening and great for viewing the planets currently filling the night sky. I noticed a satellite passing overhead, and then noticed that a star behind it was also moving. I drew attention to this, and my partner also saw the two satellites. We watched them until they passed into shadow. During their entire movement across the sky, they held the formation.

Does anybody know of any tandem satellites in use?

Have a look at Heavens-Above.com (http://www.heavens-above.com/allsats.asp?lat=47.113&lng=-124.173&alt=1&loc=Copalis+Beach&TZ=PST&Date=38083.0625&Mag=5)

Tandem satellites may be coincidental. They may be a satellite and its launching rocket soon after launch (if this is the case, the satellite may not be on heavens-above yet). The most impressive pairing is when a shuttle is approaching or leaving the ISS. That hasn't happened for a while and won't happen again for a while, obviously.
