View Full Version : TOOL, is that the only one?
Closet Philosopher 07-07-03, 02:21 PM A couple of months ago, I saw posts on this forum about a band named Tool... I downloaded the suggested songs.
My life has never been the same since I bought their albums. They are the best band ever! But there is only so much Tool to go around, especially since they keep suck a low profile. I wish I knew about them a couple years ago when they went to Toronto... anyway, are there any other bands that have a toolish lyrics, and sound. I also like incubus, and Deftones, but they are no substitute for Tool.
plasticwingsmelting 07-07-03, 02:30 PM Tool sucks. Stop listening to them.
Listen to SAETIA.
Tool, Incubus and Deftones are my three favorite bands. Good choice.
Tool has a lot of stuff out. Well, not a lot, but enough to satisfy for the time being. I highly suggest picking up Lateralus and Aemina (spelling?). Undertow is pretty good too, but it's a bit different, it's more standard metal, not quite as epic. But still a damn good album. Opiate is worth checking out too. I'm not sure what else they have, I think they have a box set, etc... Check out www.toolshed.com.
People who bad-mouth Tool are just trying to one-up Tool fans by trying to find a better band. They're just bitter that they've been unable to! :D
mars2112 07-07-03, 07:36 PM TOOL is my all-time favorite band.. have you listened to their most recent album Lateralus? it is BRILLIANT.. BRILLIANT I SAY!!
(undertow, aenima, opiate and salival are their other albums.. ALL BRILLIANT)
check out A Perfect Circle, maynard's other band.. they will be doing some lollapalooza dates this summer.. their only album is called Mer de Noms.. but they are releasing a new one this september

Closet Philosopher 07-07-03, 11:10 PM I have all of the Tool songs, I have even downloaded songs and videos that Maynard has been featured in. His voice can make me cry. I have Mer de Noms, you can tell that it has a Toolish tone to it, especially Judith. DAMMIT, Lollapalooza does not go to Toronto, I might just spend a few wads of cash, if I can get tickets in Boston, Chicago or Detroit, and take a little road trip.
I downloaded Saetia, it isn;t quite what i'm looking for, the lead vocalists appears to be in tremendous pain when they sing.
plasticwingsmelting 07-08-03, 12:15 PM Well, I'm sorry Saetia isn't what you're looking for...sometimes the best music isn't just layed out on a table like a deck of cards turned over for you to choose.
Tool is fucking crap. I started listening to Tool in like 94 and I have all of their albums and 12 of their tshirts. I've got a poster, patches, stickers...
Their best album is Undertow, BTW. And Opiate before that. Anything they release after Undertow sucks major ass. I also do not recommend joining their fan club. What a fucking waste of money.
Marigny 07-09-03, 05:36 AM Tool is one of my favorites but i'd have to agree with plasticwing, they just don't have anything really good after Opiate and Undertow. They aren't a waste of money though.
I wonder if they just aren't "inspired"in the same way. I know that Metallicas lastest was performed or practiced inside a dangerous high security prison. Maybe they wanted to express anger and a certain power to their new music and they did it.
I'll try Saetia though. any good download sites to recommend?

have you listened to lateralus at all? I think it's completely "inspired".. yes more dark than opiate, undertow and aenima, but very technical and complex.. one of the reasons I love this album.. I was very glad they went in that direction after the earlier albums

well they shot a video at san quentin and then did a free show for the inmates.. this was after the album was completed
Marigny 07-09-03, 01:08 PM ""well they shot a video at san quentin and then did a free show for the inmates.. this was after the album was completed"
-thats what you get when you hear it from the grapevine,
but i got their latest cd and it's okay. i bet the inmates really appreciated that.
oh, no i did not listen to lateralus all that much. I did the same thing when i first heard tool several years ago. My ex played it and I thought what the hell? Shut that damn thing off i kept thinking, annoyed, but then i listened carefully, felt it, and fell in love.
i could probably do the same thing for lateralus.
i'll give it shot and download a few songs. I'm all for the darker side of music but technical stuff just turns me off a little.
I think tool is progessively getting better. I like Lateralus best, then Aenima, then Undertow, etc. Their music is getting more complex, epic, eerie...
I guess if you're looking for something to mosh to, Undertow is best. But if you want music that gives you fucking goosbeumps, listen to Lateralus and keep your ears peeled for tool's future stuff. I've never, EVER heard an album like lateralus before. IMHO, Tool is like the Pink Floyd of my generation.
plasticwingsmelting 07-09-03, 03:45 PM Download Saetia:
"Venus and Bacchus"
(person 1):
"close my eyes pull my heart strings pour my tears from your hands 'connections are never easy,' you said empty words, empty soul I believe that we are afraid of one another"
(person 2):
"and I, I believe that you have died within me" ...I fade from myself I miss you again...again (what have we got?) bloody broken and hidden away I seek the rope from which we will hang or so it seems the dance or flesh on flesh has rendered us blind
(person 1):
"I look into eyes, I look into stone it's better to be stepped on than left all alone... so now I choke on yesterday when I was someone and I wonder where' forever' went and how our' everything' came undone I opened my eyes and the heaven beneath us died."
This is just one of their songs, mind you.

definintely.. couldn't have said it any better
although for moshing I would suggest Opiate :D
plasticwingsmelting 07-09-03, 06:42 PM you cannot mosh to tool. you want something to mosh to? go listen to fucking hatebreed.

hmmm.. every tool show I've been to had a mosh pit
guess no one told them you can't mosh to tool
(edit: typo)
plastic; read my post.
I didn't say Tool was good for moshing. How the hell do you mosh to 3/8? That's why I said undertow is best for moshing, it has the simplest time and the rhythyms are easy to pick out. Undertow is best out of tool, as far as moshing goes. I'm guessing if you like Undertow best, you probably like other moshalble stuff...like hatebreed :D.
It was so funny to see the mosh pit at tool. They all looked at each other totally confused. you could see they were thinking "how are we supposed to mosh to this?"
THat was one concert where, oddly enough, i think i enjoyed sitting in a seat more than having floor seats. it was amazing to just sit back and watch.
Closet Philosopher 07-10-03, 02:25 PM I have a few (well 20) of tool live videos, and there isn't much moshing going on, but it's hard to tell from the videos. When Tool tours together next time, I am for sure going, in the videos, the crowd seems to be really into it, but not dangerous. I have never really been to a big concert of a modern band before, mostly because I live 4 hours away from Totonto, and half the tours miss Totonto. I live 3 hours from Ottawa, but very few bands go there because the tickets don't sell out. Ozzfest was there not long ago, and the tickets were less that 75% sold! Marylin Manson got attacked at the last concert he did at Ottawa. LOL. I am dying to experience Tool, but the gang is with A Perfect Circle that took aff a lot more than expected. Lollapalooza is not even going to Canada:( Poor me, I feel so isolated all of a sudden.
I saw tool in Edmonton, AB. Weird that they came there, AND calgary (which is an hour away).
UNbelievable show. That's all I can say. Hands down the best concert I've ever been to, possibly the best time of my life ;).

definitely.. they are amazing live.. their music can be pretty technical and to pull it off live, so tight and perfect, is pretty amazing
yeah I never got into moshing but always found it amusing to see a mosh pit at tool shows
I'm going to lollapalooza this year and APC will be there.. I'm so stoked.. their new album comes out in sept
plasticwingsmelting 07-12-03, 11:48 AM I don't like moshing.
I like music that kills people who mosh.
try_killing_yourself 07-24-03, 03:25 PM i have already said this in another forum but when are people going to realize how stupid they sound when they try to be pseudo-intellectual about music that they think is so original and so great, i love seeing the mindfuck on "Tools" faces when you show them some King Crimson albums, their entire world is shattered when they realize that their favorite band was just a rip off... now Tool is talented and have good stuff, but wake up people, why not jsut listen to the real thing?......
Also about maynards voice....it is nice....but he doesnt have shit on Dax, Buckley or Patton....not shit...dont bother posting and quoting me on this because you will be wrong, and i am typing that in a condescending way.
PS if you watch MTV or listen to mainstream radio, please...kill yourself
theonlyguyever 07-24-03, 03:54 PM check out a little band called dredg... they will blow you away.
download these songs:
