View Full Version : Supreme court ruling on sodomy

First, the 13th district court strikes down the "amended" Pledge of Allegiance, and now the Supreme Court legalizes sodomy. Personally, I'm confused. I don't understand what is going on in this country. On the one hand, I'm so ashamed of our cowtowed citizenry supporting a warmongering, illigitimate president who took our nation by coup with his idiot racist brother in Florida. At the same time, we seem to be making huge strides towards personal freedom and the seperation of church and state. How are these mutually exclusive paradigms coexisting? Is this a backlash movement? I am so glad to see my nation maturing socially, but I really can't believe it is happening as our imperialistic administration begins scanning the horizon for a third unprovoked simultaneous war. Obviously, the unpatriotic cowards who support our most hated and shameful "president" in history are not in total control. Are we seeing the beginnings of a new America? One where the adminstration/corporation concerns itself so exclusively with world domination that here, back at home, we the powerless citizenry content ourselves with radical, overdue social changes? If so, I think it's a good thing, because if we empower ourselves by extinguishing religious laws, it seems likely that the greedy, conservative leaders are losing their chokehold on our country. Apparently the truth is not dead just yet.

I found myself bored in a (required) health class, and when the class was quiet I shouted "sodomy!" Made the teacher angry, of course, but I wasn't really reprimanded. It was quite funny.

Son, you're an American hero, and don't let anyone ever tell you different.

Well, Filibuster, perhaps the bastardly administration which you disdainfully portray is not as illiberal and regressive as you think, though I will accede that ole Dub'ya is noticeably imperilaistic.

I think the fact that Bush mentions god every time he opens his mouth on camera says it all. Religion is the problem here: religious laws. Why the hell would any government bother writing laws that mandate what consenting adults can or can't do to each other in their bedroom, anyway??? Religious zeal is the only logical explaination. It just makes no other sense. No, there is definitely something strange going on in our country. We have the most fascist government in our 230 year history, yet our courts are making historical strides towards individual freedom. This is a noteworthy phenomenon, and I would like to hear people's impressions, because I'm baffled.

If it were really the most fascist administration in 230 years, I don't see how these great strides to promote and fortify individual liberty could be occurring at all, Filibuster. Simply because Bush happens to be a religious dullard doen't mean he has to be a backwards, capricious tyrant.

Chill out, man. The whole history of the United States is written in blood. Just read some Zinn. As far as President's go, Bush is no messiah, but we've had far, far worse.

OK, ok, I get it. You want to defend this administration. Sorry, but I'm not interested in that conversation. Reality is a matter of faith, whether or not you realize it. In my reality, my country has been hijacked, and we are the hostages. Fortunately for us, our kidnappers want to wage wars on everyone BUT us. The domestic agenda is just neglectful, which every administration since Roosevelt has mirrored. That was the last time serious capital was sunk into you and me.

Again, my question is simple. Why are we changing our laws so radically now? It's just surreal.

Our laws aren't changing radically. Two things can come of what the adminstration is doing, one is more likely than the other--

-Worldwide catastrophe

-Bush is eventually voted out, and someone who at least pretends to be more moderate sets things a bit straighter.

It's not economically feasible to just kill everyone. The guys up top know that if they lose a war then they're screwed--that's why they attacked Iraq now and that's why they attacked it a decade ago, because the Iraqis were both times completely outmatched, and quick wars seem to make Americans happy. If we have another Vietnam then we go through a cultural revolution similar on scale to the one that happened in the 70s. Do you honestly thing the rich, fat white assholes running the country want that to happen?

Have a look at the Espionage Act. If you speak out against the government during a war you can be thrown into jail. It was put into effect during WW1 because we weren't meeting our conscription quota--now that's a war that was meaningless. Anyway, the law has never been repealed, I don't know why they went through so much trouble with the whole Patriot Act thing. Makes no sense, really.

Our laws aren't changing radically.

Yes, they are. You are an interesting voice, Pollux, but you are....fixated. How can you not consider the sodomy ruling radical? You seem to be a metathinker, but you deny the signifigance of SEX? These changes in sex laws will permeate our society at a level that will make the Espionage Act as insignifigant as a Debbie Gibson album. And the Pledge ruling.......wow.

It was put into effect during WW1 because we weren't meeting our conscription quota--now that's a war that was meaningless.

Props. An historian! Nice to know ya. Funny how conscription law becomes irrelevant in a brainwashed society. GO MACHIAVELLLI! From WWF to Miss America, conscription has become irrelevant. The lemmings now jump willingly. So why the hell are we FINALLY outlawing GOD????

How can you see it as radical when its already waaayy behind hte times? do you think buggery ever stopped in the USA? All thats happened is that its been seen that making it illegal is a bit behind the times. Perhaps the supreme court is a bit more libertarian than right wing fundamentalist christian, so watch out on the economic front, but really, the sea change happened idecades ago.

"So why the hell are we FINALLY outlawing GOD????"

Window dressing. it keeps some people happy whilst the rest move on in. Thres still federal money going ot church groups etc isnt there?

If morals should dictate laws then we should eat our dead. Its moral in some cultures even today. A little consentual buggery never hurt anyone.... unless you forgot the KY or were in prison at the time.

BAAAAAAD things happen whenever religion and law mixes. I don't think we should start buning witches again.

Thank God the Supreme Court struck down soddomy laws. Who wants the sex police? Regulating sexual positions to attack gays is just beoynd wrong.

See, this is what I love most about SciForums: The open minded aspects of most of it's users:rolleyes:.

And while on the subject, the President himself doesn't really have as much power as it is made out to be. Congress has most of the official power, with the Supreme Court making decisions on cases and laws.

I'm pretty sure all the Surpreme Court justices were appointed before Bush Jr., though that doesn't mean some don't have the same beliefs.

I single handedly turned this into a debate over religion.

I'm so proud.

What god? Assorted civilizations have assorted gods, each with his own moral code. Unless you can show us yours is the only real one he won't get any special treatment.
