I am not an American, and this seems like as good a place as any to see if anyone can clarify a type of American thinking that has me confused. (Admittedly, it’s not solely an American trait, but it definitely seems to be far more pronounced in the US than anywhere else I have encountered.)

I have just finished reading the article “I want my GI son to serve under Bush” by Steve Dunleavy in the New York Post online edition.

This person obviously subscribes to the brand of reasoning that most Americans seem to follow, one that says that Americans must support their troops regardless of political bias and their opinions of the war. This line of reasoning says that it is irrelevant whether you are/were against the war in Iraq, now that it is underway it is un-American not to support their activities. Nay, it is tantamount to treason to even vaguely speak out against your gallant boys and girls in uniform.

Bullshit.

Yes, I realize that the soldiers are risking their lives whilst doing their duty. But how does that legitimize this war in any way? I’m sure most of Nazi Germany supported their troops whilst they risked their lives invading Poland. I’m sure that Genghis Khan had the support of the folks at home whilst he and his army risked their lives rampaging across the Middle East and Europe burning villages and killing every man, woman and child they encountered.

The author states…

"And yet, John Kerry makes it look like those guys and gals are just victims — wrong war, wrong time, wrong place. How dare he say that to our brave boys and girls? How dare he whisper it — let alone shout it to the whole world?"

How dare anyone say to those brave Nazis and Mongols that their military action is wrong! Support the troops!

WTF!!!!! American soldiers ARE victims. They ARE in the wrong war, at the wrong time, in the wrong place. I realize there are Americans who do not think that it’s the wrong war, wrong time, wrong place. But there are plenty who do. Why should those of us who do think that not legitimately state this? How dare this man say to me that I should not be able to publicly decry the activities of American soldiers whilst they are illegally invading and occupying a sovereign nation. Why should we condone or support their activities merely because they are risking their lives in the process? It doesn't make any sense. :bugeye: Is it some sort of hangover from WWII?

We will see where the nation stands in a week.
The American media continues to prommelgate its corporate agenda of irrelevancies and obfuscations. My veiw is that most arm chair 'hawks, do not have an informed opinion. I agree with you on your major points. A free nation that is not allowed dissenting discourse is hardly free.

Regarding WWII, this is what I'm talking about. The media and 'hawks would have us compare the last 'noble' war with this one. You see it is a sham. Evidently many do not.The continual barrage of patriotic inuendo is mind numbing. I feel the polls are suspect as well.
Vote Kerry, end the Bush nightmare.

"Save our Soldiers" is a less heard catch phrase of the Anit-Bush, sadly I have never seen a bumper sticker of it.
