"Why of course the people don't want war ... But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship ... Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger."

- Hermann Goering, Nazi leader, at the Nuremberg Trials after World War II

Sort of like what happened during World War II; you know, Charles Lindbergh's fall from grace for opposing American involvement in the conflict.

Goering's comment could apply to pretty much every war.

Yeah...but it isn't that simple. The problem is that the number of enlisted has been waning in recent years. The phenomena is therefore not immune to diminishing returns. Imperial overstretch eventually kills nationalist expansionism.

"Imperial overstretch eventually kills nationalist expansionism"

Aye, except that it leaves plenty of bloodshed and misery behind it.

every war is different. but i bet every one that opposes any war will use this quote when he finds there's nothing logical or real to argue with.

hollywood has been busy making movies, brainwashing ppl that everything's a conspiracy, there's always a secret motive for everything, everyone is corrupt, bla bla bla. ppl dont even trust their own elected gov't as if it's trying to destroy the country. (yes, the elections were rigged. another conspiracy. if Gore was elected and ppl wouldn't like him, ppl'd say "Gore rigged the elections")
