I would suggest we are doing this to ourselves. No one made you buy an iPhone or put all your personal information on Facebook, or type all those searches into Google.

    Exactly.
Nearly anything you do on digital media can be retrieved with some know how and a court order.

Actually this is pretty tame compared to what some business are admitting to do with your data.

I mean this one could actually serve you if they were inclined to use it for such, say if you lost your expensive iToy and wanted to locate it.

Difference being you offer whatever information you wish to share to those sites, knowingly,... Apply have been gathering this information without making it obvious they are snooping.

Yeah, I didn't know as a fact, but I suspected.

Did you know apple can shut down a mac computer whenever they like for whatever reason they like?

Apple has also begun using proprietary "pentalobular" Torx screws in certain products, ensuring that it is difficult for you to open them without their loving assistance.

Apple has increasingly been making moves that are pissing me off.
And quality I think has suffered. I have experienced personally, as well as seen supporting evidence, that their computer products have shortened lifespans now.

I guess Apple wants to grow up and become like the rest of em?

What are you, a paranoid conspiracy nut? Hey Phlogi, have your tinfoil hat on by chance?

Why is it wrong for anyone to keep a secret database of all your personal details? Don't you like safety? Do you want the terrorists to win?

They are keeping a log on the device. They aren't sending that data to themselves or anyone else.

All cell phones today are tracked by the cell companies, *as mentioned in the article*.

The only difference is that there's a text file with lat/longs in it on the phone itself. A file which can likely be edited with minor effort, or even be kept from updating by turning the phone off.

Given the history of bad things in the world, I'm missing the part where this is evil.

According to my wife the computer programmer (<3) if someone hacks your Iphone they can track your movements too...
And the data can be gotten by court order also...but that holds true for all phones. All cellphones sold in the US have GPS tracking installed by law...and court cases have used the resulting data as evidence.
If you have a GPS in your car, they can track that too.
If you have Onstar, the government can call Onstar and have your car remotely shut off.
Data-mining capabilities mean that they can track all the times you shopped with any sort of electronic purchasing, where you shopped, what you bought.
The government's technically not allowed to do this, but apparently they are allowed to buy the info from corporate third parties...

Paranoid much? I dunno, I find it ominous that the government seems to be datamining the citizenry.
(Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to Get Us...)

Oh, and this guy figured out how to hack your passport and driver's licenses' RFID tags...
    Back in '09.

Something tells me the security hole hasn't been fixed.

    Tinfoil wallets, anybody?

But as much as I used to like my ancient Apple 2e (It had the 8 megabyte RAM upgrade!!!) I won't ever buy an Apple product.

I just don't worry about such things because I'm not doing anything that would warrant anyone wanting to know my whereabouts and even if they did I again could care less. They have that On Star company that is always tracking your car, if you want to buy it as well. The only people, to me, that are concerned would be those people that might be up to no good. That's why many people complain today, not because of the principal of the tracking but because they are doing stuff that isn't lawful and worry about who's looking over their shoulders. That's not to say there is a invasion of privacy but you could just turn the phone off until you need to use it as well.
