That's Right, Lawyer Jokes Are Out
Provocateurs get arrested in New York for telling a lawyer joke

Activists for a group calling itself Americans for Legal Reform managed to get themselves arrested, apparently for offending an attorney with a lawyer joke. According to provocateur Harvey Kash, "They just can't take it ... this violates our First Amendment rights."

A spokesman for the Nassau County courts, Dan Bagnuola, alleged that Kash and his cohort Carl Lanzisera were "being abusive and causing a disturbance." According to an AP report (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/apus_story.asp?category=1110&slug=Lawyer%20Jokes%20Arrests), the pair said that for years they have stood outside courthouses on Long Island and mocked lawyers.

And while the wisdom and productivity of that activity is left to each to judge or not, one piece of practical advice: the men are due in court next month on the disorderly conduct charge, but Kash now must also answer a DUI from a year and a half ago.

And on that count I can sympathize. But seriously, don't go looking for trouble with something like that hanging over your head. Common sense, indeed.

Here's something interesting that I retrieved from the OSBA:

CHARACTER AND FITNESS

6.05 Investigation of Applicant's Moral Character and Fitness to Practice
Law

(1) The Board of Bar Examiners is authorized to conduct investigations and to
convene evidentiary hearings for the purpose of determining whether applicants
possess the good moral character and fitness to practice law prescribed by ORS
9.220(2) and these Rules.

(2) The Board may, as necessary, issue subpoenas to secure information material
to the Board’s inquiry.

(3) An applicant may be denied admission for refusing to provide the Board with
information material to the Board’s inquiry regarding the applicant’s good moral
character and fitness to practice law.

How do you know if a lawyer is lying?

I was sitting in a friend's living room once when he got a strange phone call. After a couple of minutes, he hung up, shook his head, and told me it was the California Bar Association calling on a character reference; my friend's college drug dealer was eventually admitted to the Bar. To be more precise, I think it was the CBA. We were thrashingly high; it took about a minute for the humor to set in.

I thought all the attorneys had been drowned. Somebody has asked: "what would be a good start? The consensus answer was: All the attorneys at the bottom of he ocean.
