Dear sciforumers, it is time again for the annual spuriousmonkey's science competition. For those who never participated let me explain. Below I show a histological picture. Lines indicate a certain structure or tissue followed by a letter. It is your job to identify these structures. Extra points are given for originality and accuracy. I will give even more points if you can identify the species, the thickness of the section and things like what kind of staining is used, or what orientation the section has, or the actual age of the tissue in question. The use of Kauffman or a similar reference work is not allowed. And maybe proper biologists could wait a bit before they respond and let others have a go at it first. Structure A is rather large and very typical although half of it is not visible. If possible also identify A1-A4. - A? - A1? - A2? - A3? - A4? - B? - C? - D? A close up of A. http://spuriousmonkey.com/wiki/images/1/14/Closeup-A.jpg A closeup of B. http://spuriousmonkey.com/wiki/images/2/24/Closeup-B.jpg Closeup of C and D. http://spuriousmonkey.com/wiki/images/3/30/Closeup-C-D.jpg
Looks a bit like a hair follicle, a pacinian corpuscle, a vein (venole) and an artery (arteriole) .............I could be wrong though .....:m: Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
It looks like a penis inside a vagina. A1 - cartilage inside the penis A2 - helmet.. material A3 - urethral .. stuff. With a healthy coating of semen and maybe a bit of pee. A4 - Jap's eye? B - a big ball of sperm? =/ C - cooties D - egg I've just realised the scale. That'd be a very small penis and vagina. Super tiny midgets? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
LOL, LMAO, ROTFLMAO ..........:m: Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! A2 must be a condom ..........
So far, all I can say is that it's an animal... LOL! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Spurious, you haven't been taking samples out of my kitchen sink again. I told you before, the washing up's been left for 3 months as part of a very important project and you shouldn't clean anything.
As a developmental biologist myself I instantly recognise what tissue is shown here and can name all the relevant labels. But as per spuriousmonkey’s request I’ll wait to see if anyone else can do it first. Hint: no one is correct yet – the whole penis idea is way off. If you give me the go-ahead spuriousmonkey I’ll give my answers.
It's a transverse section of an (animal) embryo. Bear in mind that these embryonic structures are still forming and end up looking somewhat different in a fully-formed animal. One of those structures will degenerate and disappear altogether by the time the animal is fully formed.
You said everyone was wrong in your hint. I had said before it was an animal. Then I notice that structures B and D were quite peculiarly circular in shape and thought they could be a transverse section of an artery or something like that. It's an embryo? What parts of an embrio? LOL!? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Oh, I meant that the penis quesses were wrong, not that it wasn't an animal. Yes, there is a major blood vessel (you can even see some blood cells in the lumen of the vessel) but it's not B - that is something else entirely. Think dorsal.......
Huuummm... I find it hard to figure out cause I'm unsure of the scale. I'm not used with thinking in nanometers... LOL! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! OH! Is the blodd vessel C? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! What IS B, after all? I suppose this is not a human embryo. Right....? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
There is a 100 micrometer scale bar in yellow in the bottom right corner. Yes! I'll wait to see if anyone can get that. The structure starts with an 'n'. I don't believe so, but it is a vertebrate. Ahhhhh, not D but maybe something else is....... Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! I have to go now - I'll come back tomorrow.
