Just ran across another thread (now locked) where posters choose to attack the poster due to poor grammer and spelling. Not that that can't be an issue, I just thought the following might be of interest to some: ********************************************************** Only great minds can read this This is weird, but interesting! fi yuo cna raed tihs, yuo hvae a sgtrane mnid too Cna yuo raed tihs? I can read it, but thats only because I am used to American spellings Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
yeah, but all the letters that need to be there are there. And the first and last letters are in the correct spot. One notorious bad speller here doesn't even come close sometimes.
The point about bad spelling is not so much that the result is unintelligible (although it can be), but that it takes more effort on the part of the reader to decipher it. Also, the reader can end up annoyed that the writer does not follow the accepted conventions of the language. Bad spelling also is not usually an isolated error. Bad spellers also tend to make grammatical errors, use the wrong words ("their", "there"), use inappropriate punctuation (its, it's), make up their own expressions ("escape goat") that they have misunderstood, and so on.
No disagreement with actual evidence of ingnorance or bad spelling perse. However, I have seen foreign posters ridiculed which I think is in appropriate as well as being just picky to attack a poster. I in fact have had many occasions where I used a word SPELLED CORRECTLY several times but then post with it misspelled once in the same post and have SOMEBODY comment about learning to spell in grade school - hmmm wonder who might be guilty of doing that? I'm going to be pedantic and call you on "grammer" and the misuse of the apostrophe in the thread title.
Damn "Possessive", you would be right - Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Actually I question your complaint in that the ' is also used to signify a contraction rather than write "typographical error". i.e. - Do Not = Don't; Can Not = Can't; Will Not = Won't What say you?
Note that this text above isn' just any kind of misspelling, though. It is systematic: words that have four letters or more have the first and the last letter right, and the rest of the letters also belong to the word. Basically, the word is there, just a bit scrambled up. This makes reading so much easier. But when people misspell, there is usually no such orderliness. Instead, there are wrong letters, additional letters, missing letters.
