My sound card on my dad's old computer isn't working. He runs on Windows 98, and here's what I did to check out the error message:

Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> System. I then clicked on the Device Manager tab and clicked on my sound card. The sound card is labled: AC-5618 Audio CODEC

Here's the error message I recived:

This decive is not working properly because the BIOS in the device is reporting the resources for the device incorrectly. (Code 9)

Now, what do I need to do to fix my sound card, or should I get a new one? If I have to get a new one, how can I get one that will work for Windows 98 and can get it for free.

Have you tried getting new/updated drivers for the card?

Is that a device from Actionwell, ActionMedia Sound/Modem Combo Card?

If so, drivers can be found here: ftp://ftp.redcom.ru/pub/support/hardware/combo%20express%20modio%20ac-5618/v211mv.zip

Try this first:

1) Download and extract the drivers contents into a folder

2) Uninstall the device from the device manager

2) Do a "Scan for hardware change"

3) When asked for drivers by the Wizard, choose "From a specific location" and specify the folder where the drivers are located.

Let me know if you had any trouble.
