When doing drills, I expect that all who are so conditioned would keep performing as expected unless they were actually taken down. That is part of the military conditioning, as I understand it, to retain focus no matter what the distraction.
Certainly looks to be working in that clip.
Horrifying to think of the potential outcome.
I wonder what the punishment was for the soldier who was careless in his use of the rifle? :bugeye:

Ya I wondered that too, can't find it, Usually a suspension without pay (which is a real hardship for most underpaid soldiers).

I don't imagine the military is going to make such details terribly easy to find, as the entire incident is a considerable embarrassment.
How many people have been lost to 'friendly fire' in the field?
Mistakes happen, everywhere and when. We are fallible creatures and sometimes our failures are epic. :(

What an epic fail on the part of the idiot behind him.
I would have jumped sky high. Please note that objects in the video (sloping grassy area, trees, park bench, sidewalk) suggests that these soldiers were preforming in public, which suggests the use of blank cartridges. Yet, the blast (even without the retaining material) from a blank cartridge can be serious, even deadly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon-Erik_Hexum#Death). I would still have jumped sky high.

Maybe you are right, I think some actor was killed by a blank too...forget who.

Another possibility.
Perhaps he was so alarmed by the gunfire that he broke wind, blowing his cap off.

That guy probably just thought his hat fell off. Bruce Lee's son Brandon got killed by a blank while filming The Crow. You shouldn't forget such things.
