Heat attacks, diabities, back problems are all on the increase, and all problems caused by being over weight, and with public health care in australia tightening thier belt, dont you think it is about time that all fat people should stop eatting. the tax payers are paying for their over eatting.

Anyone grossly overweight should be shipped off to a island and be put on a strick diet. this would not only be a solution but a deterent.

Well, not all those health problems are caused by obesity, and obesity is not always caused by over-consumption of food, there are many other factors and causes too.

So I think people should have the freedom to eat, I mean, come on, how can you force someone to stop eating. People should have the right to choose what the eat and how much they eat. And yeah also if a person eats a lot, maybe his/her body requires and demands that amount of food.
I think that the government or society should increase the advertisement and promotion of healthy diets, so more people will think before they eat something.

That might depend on the island.

This island might be a deterent: http://www.geog.mcgill.ca/grad/lantuit/images/Herschel/IMG_0436.jpg

But this island might be a motivation: http://www.hostehotel.com/pict/location1.jpg.

I think the primary reason for obesity is sedentary lifestyles of our cultures. H. sapiens evolved running, jumping, climbing, hiding, and hunting from prey, for prey and praying for a mate. That's a lot of activity. In the modern age of the automobile, telecommuting, the television, and fast food, the human body is still adapted for the former lifestyle.

Changing the culture of inactivity to one of activity is surely a cheaper and less energy intensive response than shipping off the obese to an island. Even though I did take your statement to be facetious more than serious.

I totally agree. One of the top causes of obesity is inactivity and energy imbalance. Some people eat a lot, but exercise little. Some people eat little, but exercise a lot.

Do you mean a different island?

Some people are over weight because of a medical condition. It does not matter how much or how little they eat. What would you do with these people? Why focus on weight problems, when there are many illness caused by types of employment. Lime dust causes respiratory problems. Cancer caused by mining. Tennis elbow caused by repetitious work. The list goes on. I am more concerned about children being born or after receiving their needles becoming autistic. Another concern is the amount of people taking mood modifying drugs. I know a lot of thin people with the same types of illness that fat people have. I have friends that are over weight, but they are healthy. I am thin, but it's not cause I am weight conscience, but rather lucky. This does not mean that I am and will always be healthy.

Man. I hate most fat people. Has anyone noticed how stupid they are? I don't think it's necessary to ship them to an island though. America's obesity problem is likely to be short lived. Just a temporary thing for now. Eventually everyone will find that it's easier being thin, fit and beautiful rather than a lazy amorphous sack of blood on a couch eating pork rhinds all day.

your on the right track... kinda
obesity is a mental disorder, no different than any form of drug addiction.
NOTE WE / I am NOT talking about people who have a medical condition, as THAT is a clinical illness of THE BODY, where-as obesity is a symptomatic disorder of the mind.

obesity is now the number one killer in the usa i think.
so why should it not receive at least as much marketing money as anti drug campaignes, as it surely will give greater returns financialy.... OHH WAIT HANG ON...
thats right i forgot... in countrys with private health care only, they make huge amounts of money of obese people... so how will all those diet and womens magazines people make money, what will all those over paid doctors and clinicians do.
its an industry that makes profit in billions per year.
its unlikely any real government action will be made to reduce that spending that goes directly to the billionares who run the hospitals and drug companys.
WE CAN YET BUT HOPE though...

in reality a small list of the costs to the population of lost proprietory investment would include
heart attacks
diabetes (certain stages)
lost productivety in work places
hip knee and other joint surgery and replacement
lost investment capital for having to build larger items and facilities to cater for those soo heavy and large, that will be wanted to show a decent profit from the expenditure.

then
you have all the associated mental disorders that compound the issue, with associated rates of murder and suicide and violence and retardation from poisening the body and conflicting the mind.
60% of the usa is rated as obese,
do you think any of those out to make profit will want to loose money???
a profit first health system is only going to encourage illness specialy something like obesity as it is more damaging in genral and in society and harder to fix / cure than drug addiction.

food for thought
:)

Not all obese people have a mental disorder (and very VERY few have a true medical disorder)

Honestly most just have a lack of motivation on their part (i hesitate to say slothfullness), and obesity is a LEARNED behavior usually - like what someone else on this post said, its all about evolution - they learned that exercise isnt necessary per se, not when theres a mickey d's on every corner. Not to mention we dont have tons of farm work or manual labor to help keep our weight down. :bugeye:

I don't know the precise stats but I am POSITIVE the majority of obese people did not become overweight because of a medical disorder. I'm against this new anti-fat trend running through north america but I'm tired of the, "it's glandular!" excuse. I smoke because I'm an idiot with no self control, if I can admit it's my fault so can all those self-inflicted overweight people out there.

I think we should change a few of the factors that encourage obesity. This might be a blatant generalisation, but I think it's been noted that there are a load of fast food adverts on during kids programs, and celebrities/movies are used to promote fast food. However, if you did cut all that and if fast food consumption would go down, then the economy in that area would shrink too, so guess you're gonna have problems whatever you do.

I believe that people should learn how to shut their mouths more and that would make them eat less.

I think religion is societies disorder. It delays people from the inevitability of the humanist revolution and the massive social benefits that would result.

It is natural for any human beings to gravitate towards fatness because of the way we have evolved. Over time the fattest people will thin out in numbers due to related health problems.

But don't forget there are emotional reasons why people who are obese eat, and then there are just people who are greedy.

Eliminate commercials for food on television. I bet that would result in millions of Americans loosing weight.

A corporation is not really a "person" therefore it should not be allowed freedom of speech in any circumstance. The government should be able to gag a corporation according to the will of the people if that is better for "society."

What has been learnded about psychology is being used to manipulate and enslave us. We can't maintain a FREE country if we can't think straight.
