Alleged Mosque Bombing Plot Thwarted Florida Police Find Explosives, Manuals, Target List in Podiatrist's Home By Rachel La Corte The Associated Press T A M P A, Fla., Aug. 23 — A podiatrist arrested after authorities found a stash of guns and explosives in his home was planning to destroy an Islamic education center and dozens of mosques, court records revealed today. Dr. Robert J. Goldstein, 37, was charged with possession of a non-registered destructive device and attempting to use an explosive to damage and destroy Islamic centers. During a search of his Seminole home, deputies found a typed list of approximately 50 Islamic worship centers in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area and elsewhere in the state. They also found detailed plans for destroying an Islamic education center with the use of bombs. The location of the Islamic education center targeted was not disclosed. "It looks like this guy was going to target some Islamic mosques," Pinellas County Sheriff's Detective Cal Dennie said. "He had a list of what he wanted to target and the directions on how to get there." Suspect’s Wife Notified Police Residents were evacuated overnight from the townhome complex after Goldstein's wife, Kristi, had called police, saying her husband was acting unstable. Kristi Goldstein said her husband had threatened to kill her, according to an affidavit by ATF Special Agent James Booth. After half an hour, police talked Robert Goldstein out of the home and he was placed in custody under the Baker Act, which allows involuntary commitment for analysis. Detective Cal Dennie said today that police found a cache of up to 40 weapons, including .50-caliber machine guns and sniper rifles. "You have to have a special license to get this stuff and he does," said Dennie, who said Goldstein had no criminal record. House Full of Explosives, Manuals But he also had more than 30 explosive devices, including hand grenades and a 5-gallon gasoline bomb with a timer and a wire attached, Dennie said. "It's a number of destructive devices he had, pretty sophisticated stuff," he said. "He had an elaborate system, with video cameras and everything." Deputies also found five or six rectangular packages with timers on them. The Hillsborough County bomb squad from Tampa and federal bomb experts were called to the scene, and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms officially took over the case. "He had books on how to make bombs and he was using VCR tapes and walkie-talkies as a means to explode bombs," Dennie said. Townhouse Complex Could Have Been Destroyed The 25 to 30 residents who were displaced were allowed back after police opened a safe thought to have contained explosives. There were only more guns in the safe, said Special Agent Carlos Baixauli with the ATF Tampa field division. "If one of those bombs were to have gone off, that townhouse would have been destroyed," Baixauli said. "If the others exploded, we would have lost most of that townhouse complex." Baixauli said investigators pulled out of the home once they cleared it of the weapons. Dennie said that Goldstein's wife cooperated with investigators; neither Dennie nor Baixauli would divulge what she said. Goldstein had not missed work recently, Dennie said. A message left at Goldstein's medical office was not immediately returned today. Goldstein's home does not have a listed phone number. According to press reports a Jewish man, 37 year old Dr. Robert J. Goldstein, a Podiatrist, was arrested Tuesday after authorities found a stash of explosives and weapons, including .50-caliber machine guns and sniper rifles, in his home. Police also discovered a list of some 50 Florida mosques and detailed plans for destroying an Islamic education center using bombs. In addition, attached to the list of Islamic centers were three pages that included a schematic drawing of an unknown Islamic center and instructions on what to wear and how to carry out an attack. The plan read: "OBJECTIVE: Kill all 'rags' at this Islamic Education Center -- ZERO residual presence -- maximum effect…Set timers for approximately 15-20 minutes to allow for enough time to get out of the area, but to confirm explosions has been successful…Hand to hand is unlikely but be prepared to liquidate [Muslims] up close." Also, according to court documents, the template for the bombing outlined details of what Goldstein would wear, how he could get rid of fingerprints and how he would engage in hand-to-hand combat if necessary. The document lists a person named "Val" as an accomplice, but that name is scratched out, and "Mike" is handwritten over it throughout. In our opinion, this incident is not being taken seriously enough by law enforcement authorities, elected officials, religious leaders, or the mass media. We would like pose a few simple questions regarding this matter: 1- Why has not the media or government officials made mention of the man's religious background? It is routine for the media and the government to mention the religion of Muslim Americans when they are involved in similar incidents. We are sure the incident would have been treated much differently had the alleged perpetrator been a Muslim threatening to attack synagogues. 2- Why is this man not called a terrorist, and his plans referred to as terrorist actions? Again, if the man were Muslim, the label would have been attached to him immediately. 3- Why there are no outcries from the government officials and the media about the magnitude of this terrorist plot? Fifty Islamic centers, which service hundreds of Muslim Americans, including women and children, were a target. If the plan had have been successful, a massacre would have taken place. 4- Why is there no protection being offered to the mosques in the area targeted? In fact, law enforcement officials seem to almost admire the suspect by referring to his action as being that of "smart guy" who "knew his stuff." 5- Why is there no man-hunt by the FBI for others who may be accomplices in the plot? As we said before, documents found at the suspect's premises made mention of at least one accomplice named Mike. 6- [/B]Why has there been no public condemnation from the Bush administration? Is not Mr. Bush the President for all citizens or just a certain group? We would also like to remind readers that in a similar incident last January, Jewish Defense League chairman Irv Rubin and a group member were charged with conspiring to blow up a mosque and the office of an Arab-American congressman in California. This incident too was not taken seriously enough. "Americans are being bombarded on a daily basis with anti Muslim hate speech and rhetoric from right wing-religious leaders, politicians and media commentators," said IAP President Rafeeq Jaber. "This latest planned terror attack on the Muslim community is the direct outcome of all this hateful speech and is creating a heightened climate of hostility against the Muslim community," Jaber further stated. People of conscience and good-will must raise their voices and persistently continually make mention of these important questions in their local media and to their elected officials. In addition, this case should not be handled by Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), as is the case now, but should be handed over to the FBI for a thorough and speedy investigation. Israel is the U.S.'s evil stepchild and as long as influential Jews wish to keep anything bad from reflecting on their religion or the country they stole, then the "Thieves Of Democracy" will see to it that their corporate press toes the party line. Eventually, the amount of bad publicity they receive from the evil deeds that they commit will have an effect and force them to moderate their evilness, but that takes time.
I believe this has less to do with Israeli/Palestinian issues and more to do with current American war. The idea during any war is to have public support no matter who the enemy is. Like it or not - this war has the common enemy as Islamic fundamentalists. During WWII there was plenty of this against Japanese. During WWI it was against Germans. The American media during WWII focused more on the crimes commited by Japanese than by Germans because it would aid the war's popularity. It's just the way war works. Example is the attack on July 4th. When LAX happened every news station immediatly assumed it was an Islamic terrorist attack against the USA. Not because highlighting Islamic fundamentalist attacks aids Americas side on the Israeli issue, but because it aids their war effort. Like was illustrated earlier on these boards - American media made it out to be one of the most disturbing things ever that chemicals were tested on a dog in Afghanistan yet have allowed testing on people and animals for years. Highlight your enemy. Make him less human. That is the way to gain public support in war.

They characterized the shooting as an act of terrorism because Hadayet espoused anti-Israeli views and was opposed to U.S. policy in the Middle East, the sources said. Investigators also concluded he was driven by a number of other factors that day: His limousine business in California was failing, his marriage was suffering, and after his wife and children left for Egypt he was alone and depressed on his birthday -- the day of the attacks.
