View Full Version : Site-wide slowness.
Cottontop3000 08-29-05, 03:19 AM Anyone have any ideas why it is taking so damned long to do just about any damned thing on this forum now? Is the server just shit? Is it because of my Adblock? It is seriously frustrating at times. Porfiry? Can you do anything about how long it takes to preview a post and then to submit it? Sometimes, I sit and wait for a whole damned minute just to load a page. Am I just too damned american in wanting everything to happen almost instantaneously? :)
vslayer 08-29-05, 03:58 AM it is because of the insane number of guests around here, they take up all our precious bandwidth
Am I just too damned american in wanting everything to happen almost instantaneously? :)
Yes. You are a spoiled brat. You should go out working in the field all day.

Which field do you recommend? The cotton field? Or the peanut? Or the wheat? Brat.
cosmictraveler 08-29-05, 07:44 AM I'd say all the bots that are here do most of the slow down.

All of them! Make me proud.
Brat.
Means 'brother' in my native language ...
Porfiry 08-29-05, 02:21 PM Can you do anything about how long it takes to preview a post and then to submit it?
Honestly, no.
MetaKron 08-29-05, 05:09 PM I think that the www.wunderground.com site and other weather and news sites were getting unprecedented numbers of hits last night, making for a record for nighttime traffic for sure, and daytime traffic almost certainly. Those sites use animations. The entire net was kind of slow today, and sort of ground to a halt around noon Eastern time.
Cottontop3000 08-31-05, 01:50 AM All I know is that I am aggravated. I once liked this site so much for its large number of people and it's fast service. Now, I'm not so sure the former is enough of a reason to stick around. I'm sure I will eat my words.
vslayer 08-31-05, 02:42 AM if only there was a way to make the site into a sort of torrent network. where the server does nothing but act as a tracker and we all donate a server to host files on. if everyone on broadband gave up about 10kBps then we would be able to have insane load speeds. the software wolud be complicated, but im sure we could manage

Aww... so you have to wait up to a possible minute or so before the page loads or post is submitted?...
Boo hooo  .. Get over it!
I mean Geez.. what would you have done if you were here when the site went down for a while? Thrown your computer out the window?

I was here when it went down, the last time. I went to another site. I still go to that other site. It just doesn't have the people that this site does, and that sucked.
I post a lot. I like a lot of responses and opinions. I don't like having to wait for up to at least a minute to load a page, to preview a post, to submit a post, to open the next page, and round and round. The minutes of wasted time add up. Don't get me wrong. I still love this site Porfiry. You've done a great job in creating this forum. I am just angry, I guess, because it is a little slower than its once fast speeds.
Bells, don't I have a right to grumble a little? I mean, I think a little grumbling is better than "forum rage." "Forum rage," which might not be so bad if I wasn't waiting so long between each post.
By the way, today is much faster. Most of the time, speeds are very good. Sometimes, though, it slows down a lot. This is just feedback. Nothing more.

Having come in here this morning, I was running a web based program in the background and noted the slowness of access. I turned off the web based program and the access speed jumped to almost instant. What you need to do is ensure that your own pc or laptop is not running too many background programs apart from AV and firewalls. Your chip can only handle so much information at a time, size is relevant but not all that much different! You can have the fastest net access speeds ever invented but your pc will only go as fast as the chip allows. I have 1gb RAM, it makes no difference to my athlone 1100 chip, too damn slow.
Cottontop3000 09-08-05, 03:53 PM Yes, but all I ever run in the background when on is MSN and my e-mail. I, too, have 1 GB of Ram, and a 2.6 Ghz processor. My CPU usage is never more than 5%, and my memory usage is even a smaller percentage.
Lately, things have been very fast, nonetheless. I don't know if you changed something Porfiry, or not. Maybe the periodic slowness is a systemic thing, like how many visitors are on this site plus how many other users are using other sites served by this same server. I'm glad it's fast now. Thanks.
Red Devil 09-08-05, 03:57 PM Large numbers of members on site at the same time can not help either.
Porfiry 09-08-05, 05:09 PM I don't know if you changed something Porfiry, or not.
I didn't. We're on a shared server - performance will fluctuate - that's to be expected. It's not symptomatic of anything, nor is there anything anyone can do about it.

So, do you have an explanation for why the site slows down at times?
vslayer 09-10-05, 06:52 AM at about 9pm-10pm +12gmt and 5-6am +12gmt it slows to the speeds you were experiencing due to prime usage hours in north america and europe.
Cottontop3000 09-12-05, 07:11 PM okay, vslayer. I can live with that. I am still relatively new to the internet.
invert_nexus 09-13-05, 01:52 PM Having some weird issues now.
Can't get into any of the forums. But I can get into the threads listed on the main page....
(I was worried for a bit when I saw the database error. I went to the asmallorange forums and read a post where repairing the database is not asmallorange's responsibility as they've given the tools to do so to the various admins... I was worried that this would mean that the site would be down until Porfiry showed up to look in on things...
Does anyone besides Porfiry have the power to take care of these things? Like James? We need somebody on the western hemisphere with this power as well...
Edit: Hey. How the fuck are all you assholes able to browse the forums? I keep getting database errors everytime I try. But, I see in who's online that all you fuckers are hanging out in subforums...
Edit Again:
Now that's really weird. I fired up IE for the hell of it (to see if it showed me as being in Free Thoughts on Who's Online when in fact I was looking at a database error... which it did.) But, in IE I can get into free thoughts and few other forums, but there are still some that don't work.
This is really bizarre.
Strange. Why should the browser make a difference to the database?
Edit the Third:
Ah. It's not the browser. It's whether or not I'm logged in. I can get into more subforums when I'm not logged in than I can when I am.
What the fuck is going on here?
Cottontop3000 09-13-05, 07:17 PM None of that has happened to me.
invert_nexus 09-13-05, 07:22 PM That was all this morning. It finally repaired itself. The site was screwy for a good hour or more.
Cottontop3000 09-13-05, 09:26 PM I'm telling ya.....
Cottontop3000 09-16-05, 04:07 AM Tonight. Well, from 9:00 PM Central Standard Time (texas time, usa), 9-15-05, until now, 4:00 AM Central Standard Time, 9-16-05, page-loading times, preview times, submit times, next page-loading times, and on and on, have been quite sluggish. This is a Thursday night and early Friday morning here.
Cottontop3000 09-16-05, 07:45 AM Currently, 7:45 AM, 9-16-05. Still extremely fucking slow.
Porfiry 09-16-05, 01:06 PM Since there is nothing anyone can do about it, why bother reporting it??
Cottontop3000 09-19-05, 05:24 PM Are you serious? I still don't get it. Call me stupid.
The current (shared) server is as it is, set and paid for.
I'm guessing it's the best we could get for the money forum members chipped.
