How can I find out what sound card I'm actively using? I got a Dell Dimension 2400 but I don't have any of the papers that came with it.

start/settings/configuration/system/sound device/properties. See if it's active

Other ways to get information about your system which will require a bit of searching through the branches within the apparent tree etc are by using the RUN box from the Start menu and either typing:

MSINFO32
or
DXDIAG

Both will contain information about drivers, hardware etc.
(Although DXDIAG uses DirectX to find out the information)
