Why is it that when it snows, it is so incredibly silent. I just got home from hockey (mind you my hair froze getting from the rink to my car to leave) and step out of the car. I freeze and just listen. Nothing... Its the most silent I can ever remember it being outside in the open air. I mean its just silent!

The snow acts as a absorber. Have you seen those chambers for testing satellites? they have all those pointy bits sticking out all over, snow acts pretty much the same by muffling the sound waves because of all the air spaces between the snowflakes.

I've noticed the same thing, Tristan, but I've never really paid any mind to it. It's weird.

Or are you two the only ones mad enough to go out in the middle of winter in ten foot of snow ?

Ever been inside an igloo or snowcave? You would not even hear a canon firing at the outside. Apparantly, snow has excellent sound muffling properties.

I am in the UK and looking out at a snow covered landscape right now. On your figures I have half our season's fall already. If only.

I'm from oop north myself. I was lying about the huge amount of snow just to make our colonial friends think that we actually get a decent amount

  14. I remember seeing this thing about a machine that creates........Silence.
It apparently "fills" in the gaps in the soundwaves or something along those lines, and it actually worked. Crazy eh

what you are thinknig of is soon to be a reality, it records sound waves and in real-time is plays the same sound back, one step ahead so that the troughs from the 1st line up with the waves of the second, it essenially neutralises sound because if we are heary opposites like that our ears cancel it out. mercedes or BMW or one of those big brands is currently developing a device that silences the motor on a car using this theory

    ^^^ made a quick diagram ^^^

it could also go like this:

    505050505
050505050 (you will have to assume that 0 is a negative and 5 is its positiv equal because using negative wolud mess it up)
the average of the power at each point on the wave is the same, in the numerical case: 2.5, because as it gets closer to the neutral medium the power either side is less, so you are hearing a 2 and a -2 but at the same frequency and intensity, they become one wave, maknig the contstant 0

The devices v-slayer refers to now are available in any self-respecting gadget shop or airport duty free. The one I tried was useless!
